Records were broken

Sunday 24th April 2022 vs Cholsey Cricket Club

The first game of the season has arrived, after an extensive net programme throughout winter. Having lost the toss, but batting first which we wanted to do, we looked to make use of a flat wicket that resembled one of mid-summer – it was the furthest from a stodgy April wicket. We started with great pace from the openers of Kitson and M.Wood. who went on to set a new first wicket partnership record of 231 runs. Punishing plenty of short bowling and making the most of a fast outfield. M.Wood capitalised on this hitting his maiden ton, reaching 117* off 78 balls, with 19 4s and 3 6s being scored. M.Wood retired to ensure others got a chance with the bat in the first game of the season, this brough A.Pugh to the crease to join Kitson. A.Pugh escaped a golden when he was dropped at midwicket, and went on to punish the spin attack after the platform had been built. T.Kitson was bowled by J.Reeves for a well-made 72, bringing Lochhead, Walker and Halliwell to the crease in quick succession but failing to trouble the scorer. A.Pugh retired on 61 off 27 balls, hitting 6 4s and 5 6s. T.Stanmore came to the crease and continued the momentum, hitting a powerful 33* off 17, leaving us with a new total record of 305.

Hitting a new record total gave us great confidence at defending this score, although we knew that runs could come quickly if a batsmen got themselves set on the flat wicket. 7 bowlers were used, with H.Whitty, J.Rees, G.Gilroy and T.Stanmore all claiming wickets throughout the innings. Cholsey reached 156/6 off their 35 overs.

A great start to the season, hopefully this form continues throughout the year ahead.
