Bentley 1st team continued their unbeaten run in Yorkshire Division 1 with a comfortable 46-12 win against Kings Cross Park this afternoon.
Unlike previous games this season, Bentley didn't leave it until 20 minutes into the game to start playing rugby and dominated in defence early on. Marty Hall broke the deadlock when he returned the ball following a Kings Cross chip through, rounding two defenders and racing 60 metres to put Bentley on the scoreboard. Jack Craswell converted.
It was then the turn of the forwards to show what they can do in attack, Jake Starbuck and Tom Flounders both powering over the line and with both conversions successful, Bentley went into an 18-0 lead.
Starbuck then went from hero to villain when his usually well-controlled temper flared up following an alleged bite, putting him in the sin-bin for 10 minutes. Kings Cross took full advantage and managed to score two quick tries, pulling the score back to 18-12 going into half time, and showing how dangerous they can be with ball in hand.
Bentley came out for the second half an invigorated team, following a rousing pep talk from acting player/coach for the day Chris Hemmings and within minutes were on the scoreboard again through a well worked try finished off by Nick Pownell and converted by Jack Craswell. After making several breaks throughout the game, it was then the turn of Full Back Jonny Marshall to get his name on the score sheet, and with the conversion good Bentley were now up 30-12. Zack Levers was sent to the sin-bin for making contact with a Kings Cross player after he chipped the ball through, but this did little to change the momentum of the game.
Tom Flounders crossed the line again after taking a perfectly timed offload from Loose Forward Jake Starbuck, and Centre Paul Purnell scored an opportunistic try leaving the score line 42-12.
Marty Hall finished off the scoring in the same fashion he started it, skipping round the opposition winger and racing 60 metres down field, the last 15 with a pulled quad muscle. Jack Craswell, who had been faultless with the boot all afternoon, missed the final conversion leaving the score 46-12.
All in all a good solid performance from Bentley, who will be looking to continue their run of form when they travel to face 3rd placed Queensbury next week.
