U13 League: Herongate vs. Bentley, Fri. 21st July
Herongate - 73/8 - 74/3 Bentley
Bentley Cricket Club won by 7 wickets
Charlie was able to attend to help coach and umpire. The team arrived in good time and we were able to have a good warm-up, practicing both fielding and bowling.
Bentley lost the toss and fielded first.
Alex and Maddy opened our bowling and kept it pretty tight on a small boundary. They were rewarded with the first wicket falling in the 4th over for 16 runs. Ben and Eddie came in and the wickets continued to fall. Zak took a great catch into the sunlight and Amar got a run out from an excellent direct hit from distance. Everyone seemed pretty switched on in the field and consequently we kept them down to 73 for 8 off their 20 overs, with only 19 extras conceded. Maddy, Ben and Eddie finished with impressive figures of 4-1-9-1, 3-0-9-3 and 3-0-8-2, respectively.
Eddie and Rory opened the batting and started off well, getting to 26 for the fall of the first wicket (Rory) in the 5th over. Eddie continued to take the runs when they were there and formed a fine partnership with Alex, who got plenty of exercise taking quick singles. The total steadily accumulated until Eddie was bowled in the 12th over for 30, his personal best. George came in, but was not able to score before being bowled in the next over. Ben came in to hit the winning boundary to seal our first win of the season and a very well deserved one at that.
Herongate are not the strongest team we have faced, but this was by far our best team performance, with everyone focused and contributing and so we were able to produce a performance of which we are capable and should be proud.
Herongate were very friendly and hospitable, although their tea of biscuits was a little underwhelming.
Thanks to all the players, parents, Mark (scoring) and Charlie for umpiring/coaching.
