Berkshire made a winning start to their Unicorns Trophy campaign, defeating Devon by 44 runs at Henley CC, but they had to dig deep.
Having been put into bat, they lost their first four wickets for 37 in the opening nine overs.
Skipper James Morris and Andy Rishton (26) steadied the ship with a fifth-wicket stand of 40, but that was even bettered by Morris and Dan Lincoln with a partnership of 84 before both were dismissed in successive overs. Lincoln made 43 off 57 balls and Morris 47 off 84 balls after occupying the crease for five minutes short of two hours.
Stewart Davison (33no) and Tom Nugent (25) added an invaluable 44 for the ninth wicket, leaving Berkshire 234-9 off their 50 overs.
With Nugent taking two early wickets and Ollie Wilkin one, Devon also encountered early problems, being 48-3.
Ben Green, a member of the Somerset Academy, and skipper Josh Bess lifted the total to 95-4 before Green (44) and Matt Golding (0) were dismissed in successive deliveries by Chris Peploe.
Skipper Bess and Jack Dart lifted the total to 149, but then latter became Peploe's third victim of the match when he was caught by Callum Gregory.
Bess moved on to 43 before being brilliantly run out by bowler Wilkin, who swooped to his right off at the end of his follow through and made a direct hit.
The Devon tailenders offered little resistance with the final wicket going down for 190 in the 47th.
That wicket fell to Nugent in his final over, similar to what Euan Wood had achieved.
Nugent finished with 3-40, Peploe 3-30 and Wood 2-30.
At times the Berkshire bowlers struggled to keep their line, conceding a total of 20 wides among the 32 extras.
