Leyton had progressed through the Youth section, distinguished himself in the Colts and after a couple of seasons in the second team had made the breakthrough into the First XV squad. Aged only 21 Leyton would have been a fixture in the First Team and within the Club for decades to come.
At Colts level Leyton was one of the determined individuals who travelled from Eyemouth to play with his friends at Berwick when it would have been easier to go with the flow. He was popular with his teammates – both old and new showing a calm exterior to a steely inner core. He impressed his coaches with his dedication, enthusiasm, skills, reliability, work rate and sheer determination. He never gave up during a rugby game and would chase back when others would have stopped. In senior rugby, he established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet. With the 2nds, he was part of a young and exciting team that capped a couple of great seasons this year with a Cup win. His consistency at full back saw him break into the First team squad and he was earmarked for greater involvement in the seasons ahead. He had a life full of potential, which makes his loss even more shocking for us.
To those that knew and loved him best he will leave a huge hole in their lives. He was described by one of his closest friends as being the “heart and soul of our team and group of pals”. As a Club, we have experienced similar tragic events before. We survived by supporting and leaning on each other to share stories and to give each other the chance to speak about things when times are hard. As a Club, we offer our support and whatever comfort we can to Leyton’s family, friends and teammates. That support and offer to chat to someone remains open forever. Once part of the Berwick Rugby Family you are always a part of it, no matter wherever your life path leads you.
A service will take place at Houndwood Crematorium on Tuesday 14th June at 12.30pm to which all family and friends are welcome. Single flower tributes only or donations if desired for a Memorial Bench. At the family’s request, please wear bright clothing please.
On behalf of everyone at Berwick Rugby Club I offer our deepest condolences to Leyton’s family and friends at this most difficult & saddest of times. #RIP Leyton
