Berwick toppled by Falkirk

Berwick welcomed title favourites Falkirk to Scremerston on Saturday. Falkirk were sitting top of the table on maximum points following their first two games whilst Berwick were near the bottom having drawn with Stew Mel in week one and an away loss to Stirling County with a depleted squad due to player unavailability.

With Berwick nearly back to a full strength squad, the game was kicked off by Falkirk and it didn’t take them long to get on the scoresheet. Some sloppy defence from Berwick allowed the right winger to score after 2 minutes. Falkirk kept the pressure on Berwick and scored a further two converted tries in the first 10 minutes of the game from the impressive Faulds brothers who would be a thorn in the Berwick side the entire day, taking the score to 21-0. Jordan Jackson was forced to leave the field early due to a hamstring injury after a tremendous try saving tackle and was replaced at fullback by Ben Nicholson. Berwick eventually managed to get the ball and after some strong forward play, Nathan Melrose managed to bosh his way over his opposing man and score between the posts. Unfortunately the Falkirk side would once again go on to score two impressive tries and secure the try bonus point within the first 40 minutes. This was a long way back for Berwick but after a strong scrum, the ball was shipped to Aidan Rosie to open his account for the season at his new position of outside centre. Rosie managed to use his strength to bust over the line in between the posts to make it an easy conversion for Jack Webster. Half time score was Falkirk 38 Berwick 14 and a long way back for Berwick.

As the second half got under way, Berwick managed to get a bit more fire power and put the Falkirk side under more pressure. Eventually off a scrum move, Ben Nicholson would score out wide which again was converted by Webster who was very impressive off the tee all game. Falkirk responded and opted to take the points from a penalty which was converted. Falkirks ill-discipline began to bring up a number of penalties, however no yellow card was ever given much to the Berwick touchlines amazement. The inconsistency in the tackle height from game to game is proving to be very frustrating for all sides as each referee is seeming to have a different interpretation. Berwick would eventually get their try bonus point after a number of phases, a wide miss pass from Webster found Ryan Wilson to bundle over in the corner. Falkirk would then put the game to bed after a well worked driving maul from 5m out managed to truck its way over the Berwick line. Berwick managed to score one final try as Webster broke the line, fed it to the returning Alex Orr who was brought down metres short, but managed to pop it to Captain Ali Grieve to dive over. Berwick had their eyes on a losing bonus point but had left it too late with Falkirk kicking the ball into touch to end the game 48-35 to the visitors. Falkirk will be a difficult team to beat this year, but to score 5 tries against them the Berwick side should take some heart as that will be a difficult achievement for a number of other teams.
