With a match day squad containing ten players from last season’s U16 squad a new look Colts opened their Border Semi-Junior League account at Scremerston against Kelso Harlequins.
Berwick started brightly and despite being camped in the Kelso half for long periods they were unable to turn their possession in to points. By contrast, Kelso made good use of the ball when they had it making three visits to the Berwick 22 in the first period, scoring every time. HT Berwick 0 – Kelso 17
In the second period the Colts eventually posted their first scores of the season through Calum McGuire and Scott Wilson following some good work by the home pack. Unfortunately, it was a case of too little too late. FT Berwick 10 – Kelso 36
This was good experience for the new Colts and a number of positives can be taken from the match. They never lost a scrum on their own ball and stole three against the head. In the line-out, it was a confident start to the season with the catch and drive looking strong. The backs have some good ball players and with game time together will blend in to a useful outfit.
Despite having what must surely be one of the biggest packs in semi-junior history Berwick were unable to turn their physical advantage in to points. Experience is the key and if the forwards had been able to put together some phases of play in the right areas of the park then the result could have been much different.
