The Berwick under 13 team have not had a game since early January due to weather postponing fixtures so on Sunday they travelled down to Percy Park in what can only be described as far from ideal conditions with sleet and bitter wind making conditions very difficult to play rugby in. Percy Park are again one of the strong teams in this area at this age group so the lads knew that they would have a hard task but were really up for game as they all desperately wanted some rugby.
From the Kick Off the Berwick forwards chased and hunted the Park forwards down and turned the ball over for our backs to have a run which we tried to do but when ball was lost in tackle it immediately became apparent why Percy Park are feared as they were allowed to unleash their backline and the Full Back who was outstanding all match ran in a superb 60 yard try, he then scored again from Kick Off as ball was shipped straight to him. Berwick saw very little of the ball but did get a few scraps from a strong scrum and twice got near the Park line but just lost it forward on both occasions. Park scored a number of tries all from wings and full back who were attacking from depth every time and Berwick defence missed too many first tackles. All the Berwick Boys kept there heads up and really kept trying players standing out were Duncan Hardie playing at No 8 and Elliott Gray at full back who really stuck to cause and in the last play of game Elliott took the ball up to the Percy Park line and his forwards drove him over to secure a consolation try. The game finished with Park winning 55-5 but comments from Percy Park were that Berwick had never let heads go down and are a credit to club. This next week the Boys travel to Blyth for semi final of Northumberland Shield.
