Berwick travelled to Northern at the weekend to take part in the first round of the Under 13’s County Cup. Northern are rated as one of the best teams in the county at this age group and the Berwick boys knew they would have a hard task ahead of them.
Despite a very enthusiastic warm up and the team being up for the game it wasn’t long before Northern showed us why they are feared in the area with the forwards competing very aggressively at the contact area and the backs running some really good moves. Northern’s number 8 was able to dictate play and scored a hat trick of tries with some powerful drives off the base of the scrum and the winger was also able to secure a brace of tries showing some electric pace. Berwick did manage to secure some ball on their own scrum to set up one or two attacking runs but unfortunately weren’t able to provide the support to protect the ball against the strong Northern pack. Berwick spent most of the game in defence and Northern ran out comfortable winners.
The Berwick boys were really down about the defeat in the changing room afterwards as they didnt like the taste of defeat but they have no reason to feel disheartened as it is all part of development for them and they all agreed that heads had gone down too quickly and I am sure when we get our second chance in the Plate later in season against Blyth or Ponteland that nothing will be left on pitch.
