MATCH REPORT: Bicester 7 - 57 Chippenham
By Paul Jaggers
SWI EAST: BICESTER 7 CHIPPENHAM 57 BY PAUL CHRISP
Bicester were outplayed by a strong running and well organised Chippenham side who scored 9 tries, 6 of which were converted by fly-half Domenic Riccio, who also crossed the line for 2 tries late on in the 2nd half. The visitors scored their 4th try after only 20 minutes, but Bicester, whose forwards competed admirably in the set peices, then contained their lively opponents, until 10 minutes after the break, when centre Jacob Unwin went over for his sides 5th try. Although the hosts never gave up, they were let down by some very weak tackling and generally poor cover defence. As a result the incisive Chippenham backs were in full control for much of the game. Bicester's Lemeki Valevou and Chippenham centre Sean Johnson were sin-binned for a bout of fisticuffs 11 minutes from half time, and Dan Spencer likewise was shown a yellow card 18 minutes after the break.
Visiting scrum half Lewis Surry opened the scoring after 5 minutes, darting under the posts from a quick tap penalty move. Fly half Riccio converted this and the one that followed immediately when winger Bradley Doggett sped across to the right of the posts, from a scrum. 4 minutes later, from another scrum, lock Henry Kirkpatrick put openside flanker Charlie Palmer across for an unconverted try. centre Adam Hall then went close for Bicester on the left, before a slick crossfield handling move ended with winger Matthew Dickens touching down for Chippenham's 4th try. Just before half time Bicester pressurized the visitors with 2 scrums, 2 line outs and 2 penalties in quick succession, but they could not break down their solid defence. Early in the second period, home flanker Francois Wiese cut a superb line to the right, direct from a scrum in the centre but his pass close to the line, went astray, and moments later, Chippenham centre Jacob Unwin picked up another misplaced Bicester pass to race over for an unconverted try on the right. Bicester then strung 7 passes together, before losing possession in a ruck, and just before Dan Spencer returned from the sinbin, visiting right winger Bradley Doggett sped past at least 4 would be Bicester tacklers, on a 45 metre run, from a line out, to the left of the posts for his 2nd try. Next, from a quick break down the centre by full back William Waddington, fly-half Domenic Riccio stretched across for an unconverted try on the left. 7 minutes from time, Bicester were rewarded for their perseverance with a converted try, thereby reducing the arrears to 36 points. First they drove powerfully up the left side off a scrum, before spilling the ball, to concede a penalty which Chippenham fired into touch. Bicester then stole the visitors line out ball and set up a driving maul, which was held up just short of the tryline, but from the ensuing 5 metre scrum, no.8 Wes Westaway ploughed across for a try, which Charlie Bethell also converted. Chippenham however were still full of running, and first full back Waddington, then fly half Riccio evaded more half-hearted tackling attempts to cross for tries, which again Riccio converted.
