Dominant Bicester win at home against Buckinham

B.B.O.DIV.3: Bicester 2nds 78 Buckingham 3rds 12 – Paul Chrisp
Bicester 2nds turned on a sparkling display of open running rugby, to overwhelm visitors Buckingham
3rds with a 12 try blitz, which has catapulted them to the top of B.B.O Div3, 3 points ahead of
2ndplaced grove 2nds, but with a game in hand also. With both forwards and backs working in
unison, Bicester simply fizzed from the front row to full-back. Winger Dave Aslett scored 4 tries,
including a hat-trick in the initial 12 minutes of the match. Fellow winger Lemeki Valevou scored 2
tries, and fly-half Charlie Bethell added 9 conversion kicks. Whilst Gallant Buckingham, who scored1
try in each half, refused to keel over, their defence was totally incapable of containing the mesmeric
handling skills of the Bicester back division.
From the kick-off, strong running by Winger Valevou up the centre, resulted in a penalty award, from
which no.8 Wes Westaway linked with full-back George Upton on the right, to send Dave Aslett
hurtling over for an unconverted try. As the home forwards drove off a line-out, fly-half Bethell
kicked long and deep up the right side, for Aslett to race across behind the posts . Charlie Bethell
converted both this one and the next 3 Bicester tries of the first session. Then Bicester heeled a
Buckingham scrum against the head and slick handling on the right resulted in full-back George
Upton putting Dave Aslett in for his hat-trick of tries . Next, a Bicester knock-on presented the visitors
with a scrum, from which hooker Will Percy plunged across for a try, which scrum- half Chri s Dicey
also converted. Moments later, no 8 Westaway broke from a scrum, lock Ryan Gallacher continued
the charge and flanker Adam Chamber s darted under the posts . Immediately, Upton drilled a long
penalty kick into touch on the right, and from the line- out, centre and ‘man of the match’ Harry
Gaunt combined with Bethell in the centre, to send Lemeki Valevou s treaking over on the left. On
the stroke of half-time, Bicester scored their 6 th try, after first steeling Buckingham line-out ball on
the left. Fly-half Bethell then broke sharply up the middle, before feeding centre Dan Horwood. The
ball was then transferred back to the left, where Upton put V alevou across for his 2 nd try. Neither
this try, nor the first one after the break was converted, but Bethel l went onto convert the remaining
5 tries in the 2 nd period.
Bicester’s 38-7 half-time lead was soon extended after the break, when good work by Valevou down
the left flank ended with no.10 Bethell in the centre, feeding Gaunt on the right before George Upton
to touch down in the corner. Straightaway, Upton collected a Buckingham clearance kick before
setting up Harry Gaunt for a try under the posts, to give the host a 50-7 advantage. Then as the
Bicester pack drove off a scrum, great work by hooker and captain Jake Sawyer resulted in Charlie
Bethell sprinting 30 metres unhindered to the posts . The route continued as Dave Aslett’s pass to
Bethell from a quick tap penalty, was immediately returned for Aslett to compete a 50 metre run to
the try line on the right. Next replacement winger Adam Hall put no.8 Wes Westaway over for a try
on the left. 7 minutes from the end, from a line out on the left, Buckingham lock Billy Feast
scampered over to the right of the posts for an unconverted tr y. Finally, when a Buckingham ball was
charged down on the left side, Wes Westaway drove on powerfully, before putting centre Daniel
Horwood across for Bicester’s 12 th try of t he match. This time Charlie Bethell converted by way of a
drop goal.
