Missed chances but job done!

After some confusion by the fixture secretary Bicester travelled to Oxford Harlequins for an unusual morning kick-off looking to build momentum towards the remaining league fixtures. Bicester found a spirited Quins unit who whilst under pressure limited Bicester to a single try.

Bicester started solidly with steady scrummaging and the usual good, quick recycled ball but with a couple of astray passes and kicks they missed finishing off the moves with tries in the corners. The game plan was definitely working but the final product was not forthcoming. Some good runs from Max and Joey came close to opening the score but a resolute Quins defence managed hold them up and snaffle a few turnovers to clear their lines. Bicester had the majority of both possession and territory but were only able to convert one Dan W penalty to go into half time with a 0 - 3 lead.

A rousing halftime chat put the boy’s heads in the right places to start the second half with storming runs from Cameron and Ed up the middle of the park, but again Bicester were unable to convert the pressure into points. Bicester were still dominating most of the exchanges with both line-outs and scrums dominant but it wasn’t until Ieuan with a combination of a speculative kick, fortunate bounce, a determined follow-up and quick feet that allowed him to wrong foot his opposite number and score under the posts with Dan W converting 0 – 10, a lesson in perseverance and blind optimism. Again Bicester had opportunities and pressure but it was one of those days where the final ball would not stick. In the dying minutes Quins gave away a penalty and Sam finished the game off with a well struck penalty for Bicester to win the game 0 – 13.

It was one of those days where pressure was not converted to points but a win nonetheless with a very pleasing and well-earned clean sheet. Man of the Match: Sam for a thoroughly reliable performance and a seamless switch to flyhalf. Squad of: Ed, Max, Callum, Garin, Adam, Harrison, Ashley, Cameron, Joey, Dan B, Christian, Dan W, Sam, Mark, Lewis, Louis, Jimmy, Michael, Ieuan
