After the Christmas break Bicester travelled to Reading for their next League match looking to continue their good run. In a hard fought match Bicester came out on top to remain unbeaten in the League.
Bicester kicked off the first half and were immediately into their stride knocking back the Reading catcher and driving forward. Reading recovered well and made some ground themselves before Bicester moved the ball wide to Jimmy who went on a good run before being stopped by the Reading fullback, but the Bicester forwards were there to recycle the ball which was passed down the line and Mark was able to get outside the defence to run in for the first score 0 – 5. Bicester were now in the ascendancy driving forward and making good ground with the forwards rucking well to give good ball to the backs. However a few silly penalties allowed Reading to get their hands on the ball and put pressure on the Bicester line. Bicester won a crucial turnover and with good hands in the forwards they charged down the pitch where the ball was out to the backs for Lewis to finish a great move in the corner 0 – 10. Bicester were not having it all their own way and Reading again pressed with only good Bicester defence holding them out. Reading were then unlucky to lose a player to injury taking them down to 14 but this seemed to galvanise them particularly in the forwards where they drove at Bicester. Again Bicester won a turnover near their line and broke out taking play down to the Reading 22 where desperate defence gave a penalty away which Dan W coolly slotted over 0 – 13 to end a good half of play.
The second half started with Bicester putting pressure on the opposition and they were camped in the Reading half but some scrappy play with the ball not going to hand meant that they failed to score from these opportunities. More pressure resulted in a Reading 22 drop out and from the kick the ball was run back and through the hands for Dan W to go over and convert his try 0 – 20. Bicester now were on top and looking dangerous whenever they ran the ball but Reading were determined in defence and put in some big hits. Another good break from Bicester saw the ball down the line and with good recycling at the ruck the ball went to Christian to run in with Dan W converting 0 – 27. With the bonus point in the bag and a good 50 minutes of rugby behind them Bicester decided to switch off allowing Reading to take the initiative and with a clever kick over the top followed by a helpful bounce Reading scored in the corner 5 – 27. This should have been the wake up call for Bicester but with thoughts of Christmas good cheer they dropped their normal intensity and Reading enjoyed some possession. A penalty allowed Reading to kick for the corner where a text book catch and drive from the lineout saw them go over for another score 10 – 27. Another penalty and a kick to the corner for Reading and it looked like they were going to repeat their last score but this time Bicester were aware and drove Reading back. Suddenly Bicester switched back on and started to win some ball again making progress into the Reading half. A penalty gave Sam the opportunity to settle things and he obliged with a neat kick 10 – 30. There was just time for Bicester to have one last go and from a scrum the ball was kicked behind the Reading defence and Bicester recovered the ball and with a pass to Louis he was able to step inside and go over for the final score 10 – 35.
Following the Christmas break this was a good performance from the Bicester squad with just a little loss of concentration towards the end. Again the forwards commitment to the break down and the backs handling were the difference which resulted in another commanding game. Man of the Match: Ed for his around the pitch defence. Squad of: Ed, Oscar, Garin, Callum, Jonny, Harrison, Ashley, Adam, Cameron, Christian, Sam, Lewis, Laith, Mark, Ieuan, Jimmy, Louis and Dan W.
