Bicester welcomed Andover to Oxford Road expecting another tough test after the last game played between these sides ended in a draw. However with the sun on their backs the Bicester boys had other ideas. Having conceded a scrum from the kick-off Bicester showed their intent shoving Andover off their own ball, Mark picked up from No.8 and drove forward, ruck ball was then swung wide for Dan W to put in a strong run only to be stopped on the Andover line but from the resulting ruck Josh picked up and dived over with Dan W expertly converting 7 – 0. From the restart Bicester again put the pressure on Andover who tried to clear their lines by running the ball and would have caused Bicester trouble out wide except for a couple of excellent tap tackles by Tom C. Bicester kept Andover in their own half and applied pressure winning ball after ball through good rucking, from one of these the ball was passed down the line for Tom C to score 12 – 0. From the kick-off Bicester secured the ball and immediately ran the ball wide with good handling down the line to Dan W who outstripped the defence to score 17 – 0. By now Bicester were playing some excellent rugby with the forward dominance allowing Josh to appear several times in the centre. With Andover at last getting their hands on the ball a couple of good tackles held them up and then excellent counter rucking by the forwards secured some quick ball that was run wide for Lewis, on his debut for the club, to round his opposition winger to score 22 – 0. Bicester continued to excel and from a scrum Ed received the ball and made a superb break before passing out to Tom C who stepped expertly inside the cover defence to score under the posts 27 – 0 (note missed conversion!). To their credit Andover kept playing and in a maul on the Bicester 22 managed to steal the ball and break away for a try 27 – 5 to end a pulsating first half.
The second half started where Bicester had left off winning good ruck ball for the backs to run. From a scrum won against the head the ball was run down the line for James to score 32 – 5. Play became a bit scrappy as the pace of the game took its toll and it wasn’t for some time before Bicester again showed their class with a planned backs move (a DDP) allowing Dan W to carve through a hole in the Andover defence to score 37 – 5. Bicester again came to life and after a couple of forward drives the ball was released for James to cross 42 – 5. Andover were not giving up and began to put in some strong runs particularly from their centre and only a couple of good tackles from Christian held them out, but pressure told and Andover worked an overlap to score out wide 42 – 10. Bicester were not going to let this be the last score and came back strongly from the kick-off. The ball was won again by the forwards and with the ball swung wide Tom C cut through to score with Christian converting to make the final score 49 – 10.
A really good game played by the whole squad with special mention for Alan and Lewis on their debuts (Squad: Josh, Adam, Jamie, Tom B, Alan, Max, Cameron D, Mark, Ieuan, Ed, Ethan, Tom Rhys, Ben L, Dan W, Harrison, Garin, Ashley, Dan B, James, Lewis, Christian).
