After the Easter break Bicester got back into the swing with a friendly against Abingdon. On a sunny but breezy day out at Chesterton Bicester were determined to continue the progress they have made this year. The game started slowly with Bicester having the possession but unable to make their pressure tell. However it wasn’t long before Bicester made a break just for the last pass to be knocked on resulting in a scrum to Abingdon on their 5 yard line. The ball was expertly hooked against the head and Mark picked up at No.8 to drive over for the first score which was well converted by Dan W 7-0.
Bicester were not at their best and gave away a couple of silly penalties at the breakdown and with the ball not always going to hand the score stayed the same for several minutes. During this Dan W pressured the Abingdon defence and charged the ball down unfortunately not with his hands but his eye resulting in him having to go off (hospital checks were okay). This seemed to galvanise Bicester with Josh going on some storming runs one of which saw him dive over to score ‘Ashton’ style, with Christian converting 14 – 0.
Now Bicester began to motor and with half-time approaching they stepped up their game and with good handling across the pitch for Cameron H to run through to touch down 19 – 0. From the kick-off a good catch and off load saw Mark run 70 metres outstripping the defence to score with Christian converting 26 – 0. Another break by Josh and some quick recycling of the ball saw the ball passed out to Ben L who took a good line outside the Abingdon winger to finish a good team move 31 – 0 with the half-time whistle going.
The second half started with Bicester’s kick not going 10 and so a scrum back on the halfway to Abingdon. The scrum took another against the head and the ball was whipped down the line for Lewis with his first touch scoring in the corner 36 – 0. Then credit to Abingdon they continued to play and exerted some pressure on Bicester that resulted in scrappy ball which was kicked through to Rhys who caught the bouncing ball in his own 22 and set off on the counter attack, through 3 tackles and up into the Abingdon 22 where with his legs beginning to go he offloaded to Max who was up in support to finish off a sparkling move 41 – 0.
The game was nearing its end when from a ruck on halfway Max picked the ball up and broke blind and showed a turn of pace to take him away from the opposition and score under the posts with Christian converting 48 – 0. There was just time for Bicester to apply some more pressure on Abingdon who tried to clear their lines with a desperate clearance just for Bicester to catch and run the ball back, set up a ruck, recycle the ball and pass it down the line to Lewis who finished in style to make the final score 53 – 0.
A good result from Bicester that showed even without their usual tight rucking and precision passing they could still come up with an impressive performance. Hopefully the rustiness from the Easter break has now been worked through as we go into the last two games of the season. Well played to the whole squad Josh, Alfie, Tom B, Ashley, Max, Cameron D, Mark, Dan B, Oscar, Garin, Adam, Ieuan, Harrison, Dan W, Ben L, Cameron H, Benjamin, Christian, Lewis, Ethan, Rhys, James.
