Injuries hit Bicester hard

Wanting some game time Bicester travelled to Witney for the first run out of the season. Unfortunately in a hard fought match a serious injury was sustained by Dan Walker with a double fracture of his leg, the whole team, coaches and parents wish Dan a speedy recovery.

It was agreed to split the game into 4 quarters to allow changes in players and positions to be made but was reduced to 3 after the injury to Dan.

Bicester started brightly in the first quarter and from the kick off Benjamin H put in a hard tackle which resulted in a turnover that was exploited by Max breaking down the blind before off loading to Dan T to go over 5 - 0. Again Bicester put the pressure on and from a scrum on halfway Dan T picked up from No.8 and ran through the defence to score with Dan W converting 12 - 0. The first period ended with another turnover ball for Bicester where Ieuan made a break before passing out to Benjamin H to round his winger to score with Dan W converting 19 - 0.

The second period showed a different Witney and Bicester were put under severe pressure on their own line but managed to hold out eventually breaking out and getting the ball to Lewis who put the after burners on to outstrip everyone to score with James converting 26 - 0. Witney came back and from a penalty on the Bicester 22 they burst over to score 26 - 5. Bicester were now finding it hard to get out of their own half but showed good defence until a 5 yard scrum allowed Witney to drive over 26 - 12 to end the second period.

The third period started with greater resolve from Bicester to take the game back to Witney and again good work in the forwards established turnover ball which went down the line for Cameron H to break and go round the Witney defence to score 31 - 12. Witney came back and some poor tackling allowed Witney in to narrow the gap 31 - 19. But Bicester were not finished and with some great driving runs and off loads knocking Witney back allowed Tom C to crash over with James converting 38 - 19. Unfortunately Dan W in a driving run fell awkwardly in a tackle resulting in his broken leg. After a delay while Dan was attended to (thanks to the Witney first aider) and an ambulance was called the game was moved onto another pitch. The remaining game time saw Bicester on the defensive but putting in some great tackles only for the good work to be undone by sloppy passing not going to hand putting the pressure straight back on which allowed Witney to score two further tries with the final score being 38 - 33.

A good positive performance which just needed some improved handling towards the end and lower tackling at times, however a satisfying day which was only spoiled by Dan W's injury (get well soon). Well done to the squad of Dan B, Oscar, Harrison, Adam, Tom B, Josh, Ashley, Alan, Dan T, Garin, Max, Ieuan, Dan W, Cameron H, Tom C, Lewis, Ben L, James, Rhys, Ethan and Benjamin H.
