Bad day at the office!

Bicester welcomed Witney for the third League game of the season expecting a close and hard fought game. However Bicester never got out of first gear and were uncharacteristically disjointed allowing Witney to control the game and run out deserved winners.

The first half started and play went back and forth with both teams trying to establish a position, however Bicester gave a penalty away from which Witney with some direct running went over for the first score 0 – 7. Bicester seemed hesitant and were standing off rather than their usual go forward and from a rare scrum against the Bicester head Witney ran the ball down the line to score wide out 0 – 12. Bicester tried to run the ball in their own 22 but a dropped pass allowed Witney to turn the ball over and drive forward to score 0 – 17. The usual team spirit was put under pressure here and some harsh words were exchanged behind the posts. This seemed to galvanise Bicester who decided that there was a game to play and for the next 10 minutes took the game to Witney threatening to score. A series of penalties took Bicester up to the Witney line where after some forward drives the ball was worked out to the backs where Tom C crossed to score with James converting 7 – 17 to bring the first half to an end.

The second half started and the next score was going to be crucial to the outcome of the game, unfortunately Witney won a Bicester lineout ran the ball down the line, recycled and went in at the corner 7 – 22. Bicester did have opportunities to stop this try but the tackling was just too high and not bringing the men down. Bicester kept plugging away and Max dummied and was through for a fine individual try to give Bicester hope 12 – 22. However Witney started some direct running and Bicester failed to make their first up tackles allowing Witney to get behind the defence giving them two quick tries to take the score to 12 – 36. Witney continued to press and from a Bicester 22 drop out the ball was run back and some really poor attempts at tackles allowed Witney to score 12 – 43. Credit to Bicester they kept going and Benjamin made a break before passing out to Louis who ran in to score 17 – 43. However it was Witney who finished the game winning a lineout and driving through to score 17 – 48 before the final whistle went.

As we said boys it was a bad day at the office where the usual tackling and driving rugby seemed to desert us, one to forget and move on to the next game. Squad of Josh, Alfie, Dan B, Oscar, Alan, Tom B, Ashley, Cameron, Mark, Harrison, Ieuan, Louis, Max, Lewis, Tom C, Rhys, Benjamin, James.
