Bicester travelled down to High Wycombe for a game against their 'B' side and had a mixture of players with some not in their normal positions.
The game started and it was fairly even as each team tried to find their way forward but small mistakes by both sides were causing stoppages in play. Eventually Bicester did what they do so well and broke down the pitch with support until they were forced into touch just short of the line. However Bicester disrupted the HW throw in and Ed was first to the ball to pick up and drive over for the first score 5 - 0. Bicester now started to get their game together and the rucking improved (lower body positions boys!) to free up some quicker ball. Bicester began to run the ball wide and looked likely to score just for the scrambled defence to get across. However Bicester's pressure told and from a HW knock on Adam grabbed the ball and breaking through three tackles sprinted for the line just to be held up but with Dan T in support to pick up and drive over and Ieuan converting 12 - 0 to take us into half time.
The second half started with some further positional changes seeing Josh starting in the centre. Immediately Josh drove the ball straight up the field where the ball was recycled and Max running wide with a dummy scissors went all the way to score and convert 19 - 0. Bicester were in control but decided to go to sleep and from a HW penalty in their own half their second row took the ball and outpaced the lacklustre Bicester defence to score 19 - 7. Bicester came straight back and looked good going forward again with driving runs, ball being set and spun wide. The ball was driven up to the HW line from where Alfie picked up and drove over to score 24 - 7. However good Bicester looked going forward they started to do the opposite going backwards where tackles were too high or non existent not bringing the player down allowing HW to gain confidence. Some indiscipline started to give HW a series of penalties and from one they hoisted a high ball where some bad luck saw the ball bounce off the catchers chest straight into a HW players arms who ran through to score 24 - 14. Now was the time to dig in but Bicester had other ideas and from the kick off the HW catcher was allowed to run through and around watching Bicester players to score 24 - 21. This was a bit too close and Bicester upped their game to again take the ball up the field with the final pass just not going to hand. Slowly Bicester edged up the pitch until they were camped on the HW line where drive after drive was stopped by HW until finally Ed took a short pop ball to drive over for his second try (and luckily just before he broke his finger!) 29 - 21. Now to the conversion Max stepped up and the kick was charged down only for the referee to call it back as the HW players were deemed to have unfairly shouted while charging the ball. Max reset took a deep breath and held his nerve to slot the ball over 31 - 21. The game should have been over and Bicester only needed to keep possession and close the clock down, but some sloppy play gave away a penalty allowing HW to drive over and convert 31 - 28 for the final whistle to go.
A game in which Bicester looked good going forward with their rucking again producing good ball, but our defence today was sloppy allowing the opposition to run through too many tackles. However a deserved win in the end, squad of Drew, Adam, Oscar, Alex, Ed, Harrison, Dan B, Dan T, Tom B, Alfie, Ashley, Louis, James, Garin, Max, Ieuan, Josh, Benjamin, Ethan.
