Bicester travelled to Henley looking to continue their winning run in the League, but in a stop start game full of niggle (a yellow and a red card for Henley) with both sides giving away penalties Bicester came up short losing to a determined Henley side. The winter break and bad weather has not been kind to Bicester and they put in a very rusty performance not quite matching Henley up front and with a lack of ball in the second half the game ran away from them.
In the first half Henley exerted the early pressure and after some good initial defence from Bicester Henley got the first score after breaking from the scrum and with a good dummy went over 5 – 0. Bicester came back and winning a scrum against the head they ran the ball wide and with good passing gave Lewis room to show his speed to score 5 - 5. Henley attacked from the kick off but gave away a penalty in the Bicester 22 who enterprisingly ran the ball and again good hands out to Lewis who beat three men to finish off a good Bicester move with Christian converting 5 – 12. Bicester again pressed and looked likely to score but an infringement resulting in a yellow card for Henley stopped the move. However with a man less Henley seemed to grow and it was they who looked the more dangerous and with Bicester being penalised they were soon near the Bicester line. Another penalty against Bicester and Henley ran wide with a forward looping to go in at the corner 10 -12 which remained the score up until half time.
The second half saw Bicester starved of possession and unable to release their runners, and from a maul a Henley player emerged through the middle with the ball and with no cover ran through to score 15 – 12. Both sides were competing for the ball but it appeared often illegally as again the game was punctuated with penalties for both sides. Things were not going Bicesters way as Henley were proving to be more dynamic at the rucks, however an incident resulted in a Henley player being sent off and again Henley were down to 14 men. However as in the first half this reduction in numbers seemed to help Henley who upped their game and kept the pressure on Bicester until they went over for a score 20 – 12. It was not going to be Bicesters day and when they did get into the Henley half it resulted in a turnover ball going wide for the Henley wing to beat his tacklers to run in from half way for the final score of the day 25 -12.
A game where Henley played better than expected and Bicester put in a below par performance resulting in a disappointing day for the squad of Dan B, Garin, Harrison, Tom, Alan, Ashley, Mark, Cameron, Adam, Christian, Ieuan, Lewis, Rhys, Dan W, Louis and James.
