After a three week lay off Bicester welcomed Aylesbury for the final game of the season. Both teams were struggling to field a full side but were able to start the game with 15 each although not necessarily everyone in the right position. A slow start by Bicester gradually gained momentum as the game progressed finishing in some sharp support play which was too hot for Aylesbury to handle and a convincing win rounded off an excellent season.
The first half started with some frantic play by both sides with lots of dropped balls as both teams shook the cobwebs off from not playing for a few weeks. Aylesbury had the edge in the scrums and Bicester were getting isolated allowing good play by Aylesbury to get hands on the ball at the breakdown. However Aylesbury were up against some stern Bicester defence and could not make any ground with the ball that they won. Finally Bicester started to get some shape to their play and following a turnover they spread the ball wide for Aaron to finish well in the corner 5 – 0. Bicester were going forward but still in ones and two’s allowing Aylesbury to steal the ball and it took a while before Bicester started playing together ensuring that the ball was set for Christian at scrum-half to distribute. Better play with a good drive and set found Lewis running a good angle to go through the middle of Aylesbury to score with Dan W converting 12 – 0. Aylesbury tried to get into the game with some good attacking running from their dangerous fullback but the cover defence from Bicester snuffed out any potential breaks. Another good drive and set allowed the ball to be released down the back line to Aaron who outstripped the cover to run in and round under the posts with Dan W converting 19 – 0 and this was the final score of the half. Not a vintage performance by Bicester with many errors but a good half time lead.
After a stern talking to Bicester came out in the second half showing their normal fast and open rugby style immediately putting real pressure on Aylesbury who were caught offside at a series of rucks allowing Bicester to gain ground. From one penalty the ball was quickly spun out to Dan W who went over and converted his own try 26 – 0. Bicester now had all the play and were not losing the ball at the breakdown as their rucking improved to protect the ball at the base. A set move saw Sam burst through from fullback with Rhys up in support to score another classy try with Dan W converting 33 – 0. Aylesbury were struggling to keep up with the speed and support play of the Bicester team and it wasn’t long before some superb team play released Aaron to cut in and through the Aylesbury defence for his hattrick with Dan W converting 40 – 0. Bicester now had their tails up and a number of breaks nearly added to the score but credit to Aylesbury who never gave up and were frantically covering each Bicester drive. Finally Bicester simply passed the ball down the line with great hands, made a break and with the ball back inside anyone of 5 Bicester players in support could have scored but up popped Ieuan to go over near the posts with Dan W converting 47 – 0. There was just time for Aylesbury to venture into the Bicester half with some good driving forward play before the final whistle was blown.
After a scrappy first half Bicester came to light in the second playing fast and open rugby with great hands and support all across the pitch. Running in 7 tries with no reply against a strong Aylesbury side really showed how far the team has come this year. Congratulations on a fine end to the season, squad of Harrison, Ed, Garin, Dan B, Ashley, Adam, Mark, Cameron, Christian, Ieuan, Lewis, Rhys, Dan W, Aaron, Louis, Sam, Johnny.
