Their chances of victory were given a massive boost when, before a ball had even been kicked, Craig and Matthew withdrew from the side due to sickness and so Bicester’s squad of 11 knew they were in for a difficult evening.

Chesterton, kicking down the slope, started on the front foot putting the Bicester centre half pairing of Ashley and Chay under lots of pressure. They worked hard to cope with a barrage of long balls and you sensed it was only a matter of time before Chesterton would make one of their chances count. That’s exactly what happened in the 17th minute of the game; when Chesterton pumped another long ball forward to Oliver Bickley who calmly slotted the ball past Jacob. Moments later Bicester came mightily close to equalising when Lawrence fired the ball across the face of the goal only to see Aiden’s shot go agonisingly wide. Both teams had other chances to score but due to some fine defending and great saves, the Half time score remained 0-1.

After the interval, Bicester upped the tempo playing some of their best football of the season. Harry, Liam and Harrison linked up well forcing Chesterton to defend with all their might. Confidence was growing in the Bicester camp and it looked like Bicester would finally be rewarded with a goal. However, not for the first time this week, lady luck was not on our side as Robbie broke through the Chesterton defence and flicked the ball past the keeper only to see his shot cleared off the line. Chances came and went for Bicester but the visitors held firm to protect their slender lead. Chesterton waited patiently for the right time to attack and with our boys tiring, they seized this opportunity to pin us back. The response was solid with a number of crunching tackles from the Bicester defence although they were unable to prevent a corner kick being awarded in the 67th minute. Chesterton took a quick touch before crossing the ball to Oliver who headed it in from close range. This was a cruel blow for Bicester who suffered another setback moments later when Aiden had to retire injured leaving Bicester to finish the game with only 10 players. Chesterton, having the luxury of 3 subs, made a number of changes to freshen things up and saw the game out to claim a tough victory. A valiant effort by our boys but it just wasn’t to be. Final score 0-2.

Overall an excellent game with Chesterton having the better of the first half and Bicester the second. Well done both teams.
