A Brief History of Tavistock AFC
Tavistock were formed in 1888 and played in the Devon League winning the league title in 1900/01. The club was forced to cease playing in 1932 due to mounting debts but made a return in 1937. In 1937 they combined with three other local sides, Tavistock Comrades, Bannawell Blues United and Tavistock West End. The club joined the Plymouth Combination League after World War II playing in Division One. Tavistock then joined the South Western League in 1952 and remained there until 2007 with the exception of a return to local league football between 1961 and 1968. They achieved their highest South Western League position in 2002/03 finishing as runners-up. Tavy became founder members of the South West Peninsula League Premier Division in 2007 but were relegated to Division One East in 2014. They bounced straight back however winning the Division One East title in 2014/15, then finished third in the Premier Division in 2015/16 before being crowned South West Peninsula League champions in 2016/17. In 2017/18 they finished in second place behind champions Plymouth Parkway but returned to the summit in 2018/19 for a second South West Peninsula title and promotion to the Western League for the first time in their history. Tavistock were top of the Western League Premier Division when the 2019/20 season was abandoned due to the coronavirus pandemic and were in second place when the 2020/21 season was also ended having played 11 games. In 2021/22, Tavistock were crowned Western League champions for the first time after finishing above Exmouth Town by a single goal. The Lambs first ever season in Southern League Division One South saw them finish a very impressive 6th. In 2023/24 they finished in 11th position and in 2024/25 they were 16th.
