A Brief History of Swindon Supermarine
Swindon Supermarine were formed in 1992 as a merger between Swindon Athletic and Supermarine FC. Supermarine FC were established in 1946 and Swindon Athletic in 1968. Swindon Supermarine took Athletic's place in the Hellenic League Premier Division and in 1997/98 they were crowned Hellenic League Champions but were not promoted due to ground requirements. They were champions once again in 2000/01 and this time were promoted to the Southern League Western Division. Supermarine struggled near the bottom of the division for the next four seasons but in 2005/06 they finished 5th. Qualifying for the play-offs they were beaten in the semi final by Hemel Hempstead. A season later they went one better and finished fourth. This time they were successful in the play-offs beating Burnham and Taunton to be promoted to the Southern League Premier Division. After five seasons in the Premier Division they were relegated to Division One South & West in 2011/12. Supermarine have finished in the play-off positions in three of the last five seasons but have lost at the semi final stage on each occasion, twice to Merthyr and once to Taunton. Last season they finished in 7th position.

Swindon Supermarine began their league season with two 1-1 draws against Cinderford Town and North Leigh. It was almost three draws in a row but for a 95th minute winner that saw Supermarine edge past Northwood in the FA Cup last weekend.

Bideford have started the season well with wins over Didcot Town and Yate Town in the league followed by a 6-0 hammering of Wells City in the FA Cup. The Bank Holiday weekend will prove to be The Robins’ biggest test so far starting with Swindon Supermarine who finished three places above them last season and of course the derby on Monday in Barnstaple.

If last seasons games are anything to go by then Saturday’s fixture will be a tough one to call. Bideford produced arguably their best performance of the season in beating Swindon Supermarine 4-0 at the Sports Ground but the Wiltshire side returned the favour at Webbswood with a 4-1 victory.
