Birstall Victoria's Open Age retained their title by defeating Drighlington 28-18 to win this years annual Andy Dyson Memorial Trophy match.

The game, played in memory of Andy Dyson who played for both teams before his tragic death in a road accident in 2008, was once again a big success and many rugby league fans turned out to watch the game played at the Battlefields last week.

The game was traditionally a warm-up game when both teams played in the winter months but, with both sides now playing summer rugby, it is now a midweek fixture.

Like Dyson, some of the players who took part have also played for both teams and they all put up a tremendous show before the Vic prevailed.

Former Drighlington players Braden Hunter (2), Sam Thornton, Ash Tomlinson together with a brace from winger Hardacre secured the
honours for Vic with Steve Sudders adding two goals.

Gavin Bird, Ben Kitchingman and Jake Dearden replied with touchdowns for Drighlington while Steve Gallagher kicked all three conversions.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable game which culminated in the presenting of the trophy to Victoria skipper Tony Aubrey and the Birstall players by Andy's parents, who attend the clash each year.
