Under 11's v Hunslet Warriors 12/03/16
The under 11’s season kicked off with a home fixture against Hunslet Warriors with both teams having had their opening fixtures postponed.
Birstall were first to score when Joe ran a good line and found a pass to Harry A who went over in the corner to score. Thomas added to extras.
Hunslet replied when a grubber was chased down after they had managed to attract the Birstall defenders. The kick was good.
Goods drives by Cameron and Aaron found Birstall inches away from the try line. Cohan collected the ball at dummy half to spot Jack in space who was able to work his way in for a try. Thomas was just wide with the conversion.
An unforced error gave Hunslet good field position which they were able to turn into a try with the ball being worked out towards the wing. The kick was added.
A kick from Verne was dumbed by Hunslet and Birstall once again took advantage of the good field position when Jamie neatly drew in the defence and offloaded the ball to Verne, giving him the try. Thomas scored with the kick.
With both sides exchanging possession, Harry T found himself bouncing off a tackle, however he got straight back in and ensured that the Hunslet player made no further ground.
HALF TIME
Brandon kick started the scoring for the second period when he used good footwork to work his way through the Hunslet defence. Thomas added the goal.
In good field position Hunslet caught the Birstall defence out when they were able to get away an offload and pass the ball to create the space to score out wide. The kick was good.
It was Birstall who replied next with Cohan, who saw an opportunity from dummy half to work his way over the line. Thomas kicked the goal.
Straight from the restart Hunslet ran the ball straight through the Birstall defence unopposed and scored, with the conversion being added.
After a kick from Verne, Aaron and Jack managed to keep Hunslet in their own 20 and pressure from the defence saw an error handing the ball to Birstall.
Great ball handling from Joseph and Brandon saw possession work its way to Harry A, who in what appeared to be an impossible situation managed to offload to Thomas. He in turn used good evasion to work his way over the line. He kicked the goal.
Following a penalty for offside, Hunslet ran a blindside move which caught the Birstall defence unawares and were able to score. The kick was successful.
A strong run by Verne set up good field position for the ball to work its way to Thomas to score out wide. The kick was good.
After some neat steps by Hunslet going forward they were able to set up what proved to be the final try. The goal was added.
Birstall had possession for the final moments of the game and managed to work the ball downfield, before the Referee blew for Full Time.
