We begin February's set of fixtures with a trip to Perth Green tomorrow to face sixth-placed Jarrow. When I started writing this, it was lashing down with sleet and snow. It's stopped now though but that will no doubt have an effect on whether our game goes ahead tomorrow afternoon or not if it starts up again. Maybe it'll clear, maybe it won't so keep your eyes peeled on our Twitter page for the latest updates as the postponements have already started with both of tonight's fixtures at Billingham Town and Synthonia respectively having already been called off.
Birtley, after last Saturday's 3-1 away win at Durham will have gained that little confidence boost as we approach this game whereas Jarrow, who were beaten 4-1 at Redcar Athletic will be looking for a more favourable result. The last time the two teams met at the the end of December, according to the blog from Northern League Media and PR Officer, Mike Snowdon, who was in attendance, you couldn't get a cigarette paper between the teams after 90 minutes as the teams drew 1-1. He was absolutely spot on and you can read that blog by clicking HERE if you want.
Birtley's win against Durham City saw them climb one place in the table (to 15th) along with neighbours Washington (16th) who we're due to play on February 16th with both teams overtaking Tow Law Town who were without a game and consequently drop to 17th place.
At the other end, Jarrow's defeat to Redcar Athletic sees the Teessiders move within five points of them and after Heaton Stan's 1-0 win against Ryton and Crawcrook, the gap between those two has stretched to three points with the Stan also having played two games less.
Goals-wise, Jonathan Higham tops the Jarrow charts on eleven goals, followed closely by Glen Hargrave on nine and Jonathan Wightman on eight with one of those coming from the penalty spot. For Birtley, Joe Barwick leads the charts with fourteen in the league so far with one of those coming from the penalty spot. The closest player behind him is on four.
The address for the game is Perth Green CA is NE32 4AQ and kick off, should the game go ahead, is at 3pm. We hope to see you there. If you need a pre-match warm up, the Red Hackle pub is just along the main road and has curry on the menu and who doesn't like curry?!
