Cleeve Ladies hold their nerve to progress in the FA Cup

NGlos City 2 v 2 Cleeve Ladies (2-4 pens)

This is the report issued by Severn Sport……I have added the Cleeve Penalty takers to the end of the report,

Bishops Cleeve Ladies claimed victory in their first Vitality Women’s FA Cup tie, beating Gloucester City Women 4-2 on penalties, after a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes.

Cleeve goalkeeper Saffron O’Brien put in a player of the match performance after making a number of crucial saves in the 90 minutes and a further stop in the shootout, as her side fought from a goal behind to lead 2-1 at one point of the match.

O’Brien made key saves from Beth Smith and Kate Ambrey and showed great agility to rush out of goal to deny Ambrey and Paige Todd during a first half that Gloucester City grew into.

Following a save from Smith, Ambrey followed up to slide the ball home but the offside flag saw the effort chalked off.

Then right on half time, O’Brien could do nothing to stop Smith from breaking the deadlock – after Todd’s cross from the left has half volleyed home.

Former Gloucester City player Lucie Cummings headed her new side level just after the break, when she met a corner from the right with a thunderous header.

Gloucester had lost their lead and then lost influential Captain, Kay Day, to a suspected ankle injury. Day received treatment before being stretchered off and taken to hospital.

City had lost the lead, their Captain and the initiative in the game and then went behind with Leonie Gough going through on goal and lifting her effort over the on-rushing Aimee Hancock.

Substitute Meg Prout came on to send the game the penalties late on, with O’Brien saving Chloe Jarvis’ effort before Zoe Gabb fired over.

Immi O’Brien, Leonie Gough and Ella Sharpe all kept their nerve before Jess Stirling stepped up to send Cleeve into the Second Qualifying Round and mark a historical moment for the club.
