Cleeve Ladies welcomed Gloucester City Womens 1st team for our first game on the newly laid 3G pitch at Kayte Lane.
What on paper should have been a game full of goals …based on both teams attacking prowess and defensive frailties, turned out to be anything but.
Both sides found it difficult to move the ball at pace, and running with the ball appeared to very difficult, as the ball seemed to hold up on the crumb.
Gloucester City played the ball better from the back into the midfield but rarely threatened. Ellie Jones tipped a rare Gloucester City effort onto the bar after cleeve gave the ball away in midfield . Cleeve mustered a couple of long range shots …which were easily dealt with.
HT 0-0.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Ellie coming out bravely to snuff out a rare Gloucester foray. Cleeve pressed and having been caught offside on several occasions…eventually broke the deadlock on 70 mins when Leonie Gough converted from the edge of the box. It turned out to be the decisive moment of the game and Cleeve took all 3 points in a tight game.
FT 1-0
Attention now turns to the cup 1/4 finals next weekend against Dursley Town Ladies, who secured their place in the County Cup final. A tough assignment for the Cleeve Ladies against a team fighting for silverware on three fronts …County Cup finalists, Currently 2nd in Div 2 and League cup 1/4 finalists!
