Bishop’s Cleeve’s Jay Malshanskyj scored what is believed to be the soonest ever FA Cup goal for a season at 19:48 on 4th August

The goal came in front of a bumper Kayte Lane crowd of around 250 when Leroy Odiero’s long downfield pass put Malshanskyj into space on the left with the new signing scoring on 66 seconds to make FA Cup history.

Thornbury were able to capitalise on some poor defending however and having already threatened once pulled level in the eighth minute when Harvey Pritchard forced the ball past Lewis Clayton after James Brock’s pass down the left.

The Mitres’ then retook the lead from the spot after Malshanskyj was brought down in the area by Nathan Sage and Toby Holland made no mistake from the spot.

A frantic opening 20 was then concluded with Thornbury equalising from a corner, with Sage redeeming himself with a towering header.

The two sides exchanged attacks throughout the rest of the half but neither were able to add to the tally.

Cleeve started the second half brightly but just before the hour mark the lower league side took the lead when Clayton’s clearance was well closed down by Pritchard who had a simple tap in to give the Hellenic side the lead for the first time in the tie.

The home side continued to have the majority of the play but struggled to break through a resolute Thornbury defence and indeed there were chances for them to extend their lead.

However, anyone who has watched Cleeve the last few seasons should know never to write them off and in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Malshanskyj’s cross found Ethan Dunbar who’s glancing header nestled in the far corner to send the home fans into celebrations.

There was still time for Cleeve to have another attack and possibly nick the win at the death which would have been extremely harsh on Thornbury however Malshanskyj’s effort went wide meaning the two teams meet again at Tytherington Rocks’ ground on Tuesday evening to decide who will progress in the FA Cup.
