Mitres progress in FA Cup

On a un-August like Tuesday evening, an own goal was in the end what separated the two teams over 180 minutes of football

Cleeve started the game brightly and the majority of the play was in the Thornbury half with the hosts missing the influence Harvey Pritchard showed up front on Friday night.

However, despite the Mitres having a lot of the game the Thornbury defence were resolute and restricted Cleeve to very few shots on goal.

It took a bit of good fortune for the visitors to take the lead when Leroy Odiero’s long throw was glanced in by a Thornbury head into the far post.

The Mitres continued to pressure, utilising the focus point of Ed Scott to cause the Thornbury defence problem. Harrison Reeves was extremely lively and in the 28th minute he looked to have danced his way through only to get clipped by the final defender in the area with appeals for a pen waved away.

Reeves was also involved on the stroke of half time as he looked to capitalise on some hesitancy in the defence, however as he was through he looked to be clipped, with a freekick not being given for either the clip or apparent back pass.

Cleeve continued to control the game in the second half and had a couple of threatening freekicks that came to nothing before Scott headed wide from Ethan Dunbar’s cross.

The hosts came into the game more in the final 20 minutes starting to cause some problems for the Cleeve defence with Lewis Clayton having to pull out a good save in the 83rd minute from the Thornbury substitute.

Cleeve managed to see the game out however to progress to the Preliminary Round where they’ll face North Leigh away on Saturday 19th August.
