Ross Langworthy’s brilliant brace sends Bishop’s Cleeve through to the semi-finals of the Gloucestershire County Cup, as Cleeve beat Cirencester Town 2-1 at Kayte Lane.

Report by Paddy Gladman

The Mitres defended well in the early stages as last season’s finalists attacked with intent, however Paul Collicutt’s side were the team who were able to create the better chances in the first half.

Captain Ross Langworthy had a golden opportunity to open the scoring midway through the opening 45’ minutes.

Unfortunately for Cleeve, Langworthy got his header all wrong bouncing the ball into the ground and over the top of the relieved Ronnie Newberry’s goal.

Langworthy didn’t give up though and was rewarded for his resilience in the 50th minute, opening the scoring as he finished emphatically into the top right corner from close range following a dangerous corner.

Minutes later, Cirencester boss John Brough was sent his marching order for dissent leaving his side with a mountain to climb.

However, Town reacted well to going behind and on the hour mark levelled the scoring.

Felix Miles struck a bullet from range which Lewis Clayton got a hand to but it wasn’t enough to prevent the ball from flying into his bottom left hand corner and tee up an entertaining closing half an hour.

Both sides went at it as neither wanted the prospect of a penalty shootout after a long hard-fought 90’ minutes of end-to-end football and eventually one side would find a winner.

Substitute Tommy Bond found strike partner Langworthy with five minutes left to play at Kayte Lane and the captain did what all great strikers do - score when it matters most.

Cleeve’s number 10 took one touch to get the ball out of his feet before leathering a powerful shot past Newberry and into the back of the net to send The Mitres through to the semi-finals!

Cribbs will visit Kayte Lane for the semi-finals in January, while Cirencester will look to focus on their league campaign which has been largely positive so far; sitting comfortably in the play-off positions.
