Hat-trick hero Toby Holland sends Bishop’s Cleeve through to the Gloucestershire Senior Cup final, as the Mitres thrash Cribbs 4-1 at Everyone’s Energy Kayte Lane.

Report by Paddy Gladman

Cleeve started the night on the front foot and could’ve gone ahead after two minutes when Holland’s strike forced a brave defensive block, however it was Cribbs who found the opener.

In the 9th minute a well-worked move down the left flank saw a chance open up for Aysa Corrick who consequently opened his body and placed the ball into the far corner, beyond Gregg Lannon, handing the visitors an early lead.

The hosts responded well though and deservedly netted an equaliser in the 23rdminute. Holland blasted a powerful free kick through the heart of the Cribbs defensive wall and beyond Kyreese Johnson who failed to deal with the venom behind Holland’s strike.

Holland continued to impress, and six minutes later nearly scored from another free kick, this time Johnson responded well by tipping behind for a corner.

The resulting corner led to a scramble in the Cribbs’ six-yard box as defenders failed to clear, but unfortunately for the Mitres – Johnson was alert as he pounced on top of the ball to relieve the pressure on his backline.

On the stroke of half-time Holland was denied once more as he jinxed his way inside from the left wing before curling an effort beyond Johnson, only to be denied by the woodwork.

On the counterattack, the visitors hit the woodwork for themselves through Zach McKenzie’s right footed effort from just inside the penalty area.

Eventually, Paul Collicutt’s side did take the lead in the 45th minute to round of a frantic final few minutes of the first half! Cleeve’s Number seven netted his second freekick of the night, with a beautiful effort that picked out the top corner to perfection from 25 yards out – the bewildered Johnson was left with no chance.

Cribbs came out for the second half with urgency and forced Josh Nelmes into a brave defensive block two minutes into the half following a corner.

However, in the 52nd minute it was Holland who would score once more. Captain, Ross Langworthy did superbly well down the left as he beat a couple of defenders before cutting the ball perfectly back for Holland to race onto and hit past Johnson for a third time to claim his hat-trick and edge Cleeve closer to the Cup final!

Cribbs sit 12 points clear of Cleeve in the table, however they were struggling to deal with the hosts on a cold night at Kayte Lane with luck not going their way…

Two minutes after their deficit was doubled, midfielder Harris Feltham curled the ball over the top of Gregg Lannon, only to be denied by the bar.

Lannon was forced into a few minor stops in the closing stages, however Cribbs’ biggest chance fell to David Duru in the 87th minute from a couple of yards out who failed to hit the target – summing up a hugely disappointing evening for the team from South Gloucestershire.

To make matters worse for the visitors, Ben McLean extended the Mitres’ advantage to 4-1 in stoppage time with a long-range strike which trickled past Johnson and into the bottom corner, sinking Cribbs out of the Gloucestershire Senior Cup and sending Bishop’s Cleeve through to the final!

At full-time Bishop’s Cleeve boss Paul Collicutt described his side as “top dollar”, noting how “everybody involved put a shift in, with some exceptional performances and obviously Toby Holland coming top of the list, scoring three bloody good goals!”
