Bishop’s Cleeve win 4-2 away at Paulton Rovers after a six-goal thriller turns sour with Paulton’s: David O’Hare sent off for a distasteful act.

Report by Paddy Gladman

Both sides had huge opportunities to open the scoring inside the first five minutes of the match.

First, player-manager Kyle Tooze delicately chipped Lewis Clayton, only to be denied by the alert Will Turner who cleared off the line.

Collicutt’s men responded well and almost took the lead for themselves a minute later. Jay Malshanskyj’s cross from the left flank was flicked on by skipper Ross Langworthy and it fell kindly to Blaine Waugh at the back post, only for the full-back to be denied by the frame of Sam Jepson.

The opener came 19’ minutes in when Ethan Dunbar beat the Paulton offside trap …

Cleeve’s number nine burst into the penalty area before cutting the ball back for the incoming Malshanskyj, who provided a perfect touch that allowed him the time and space to power the ball beyond Jepson and give Cleeve a deserved lead.

The Mitres almost doubled their lead before half-time through Joseph Selman in the 37th minute. The ball bounced towards the midfielder on the edge of the area and Selman opted to strike it first-time on the volley! Unfortunately, his effort deflected slightly on its way towards goal and Jepson was able to react well and produce a smart stop with his left wrist.

That save proved to be a game changer for Rovers who grew into the game and managed to find themselves a leveller on the stroke of the interval…

Edward Butcher picked up possession on the right flank following a corner before he swung in a dangerous cross that missed everyone and floated into the far corner.

With Cleeve desperate to get to half-time, Butcher nearly turned the game completely on its head. In first half stoppage time, he raced onto possession but was denied by a brave stop from Clayton; ensuring the sides would go in at the break with the score level at 1-1.

Rovers carried their momentum into the early stages of the second half, however it was The Mitres who would take the lead on the hour mark and Dunbar was involved once more…

The forward struck towards goal and after several deflections the ball fell to Will Turner from close range who dispatched what was only his second ever career goal, after scoring his first earlier this season.

Langworthy soon doubled the lead as Rovers’ highline failed once more; allowing the skipper to bear down on goal and finish with aplomb!

In the most unlikely of circumstances the Mitres found a fourth in the 70th minute …

Dunbar’s dangerous cross deflected off the unfortunate Daniel Restorick who finished beyond his own goalkeeper to further extend Cleeve’s advantage.

However, the hosts would get a consolation goal as captain Neil Martin led by example heading home from a corner to gift the home supporters some faith with 18’ minutes left to play.
Tempers flared in the closing stages as Paulton players couldn’t deal with Cleeve’s determined defending.

Play was stopped in the 85th minute for two balls being on the pitch. Paulton’s David O’Hare then distastefully leathered a ball at Collicutt and his bench, receiving an immediate red card.

With Rovers down to 10, the Mitres were able to see out the final five minutes plus stoppage time with ease; earning a well-deserved three points on their travels!
