Jasper Jones’ late leveller earns Westbury a point in injury time as the Mitres concede late again in an eight-goal thriller at Platinum Hyundai Park.

Report by Paddy Gladman

The away side almost opened the scoring inside 10’ minutes through Leroy Odiero’s bullet header which beat Westbury ‘keeper Jonathan Hill but not the man on the line who desperately stretched and cleared away to deny Cleeve what would have been a perfect start.

Six minutes later a calamitous mistake from Lewis Clayton on the edge of his penalty area led to a United penalty as Paul Collicutt’s goalkeeper slipped on his return to the starting 11; taking out striker Harvey Flippance.

Fortunately, Clayton redeemed himself as he sprung down low to his left to deny Ryan Bole from the spot.

Westbury did take the lead in the 21st minute though and it came from a free kick from Bole. The defender swung in a deep free kick from the left flank, which was nodded back across goal, towards Flippance who stole in ahead of Clayton to open the scoring via the aid of the crossbar!

Thankfully, Cleeve responded in the 33rd minute. Ethan Dunbar whipped in a cross for Ross Langworthy from the right flank, however the ball sored in directly over the head of Hill who misread the flight of what turned out to be a perfect ball in from Dunbar.

A few minutes later, Isaac Pearce was forced off for the Mitres with an ankle injury and Westbury were able to retake their lead in the 42nd minute.

Bole made up for his early penalty miss, as this time his wand of a left foot beat Clayton from a direct free kick on the edge of Cleeve’s penalty area, handing the hosts a deserved half-time lead.

In the first half, the Mitres struggled to get hold of possession on the grass pitch, but they came out for the second 45’ minutes rejuvenated and equalised the scoring a couple of minutes after the break despite a double save from Hill.

First, Toby Holland was denied his fourth goal of the week by the ‘keeper before Ben McLean struck gold at the second time of asking!

On the hour mark, Cleeve then took the lead for themselves for the first time in the match. Holland’s hot streak continued as he cut inside from the left flank before perfectly placing the ball into the far corner from the edge of the area!

Westbury hadn’t played anywhere near as well in the second half as they had in the first and only created their first meaningful opportunity of the second half in the 71stminute, when substitute Callum Demkiv got in behind the Cleeve backline - only to be denied by a big save from Clayton.

The visitors responded well though and were twice denied by Hill with Holland at the heart of it all once more, his venomous volley forced a sharp stop from the goalkeeper in the 77th minute.

That save proved to be massive for the hosts who went up the other end and scored for themselves a minute later. Bole’s powerful free kick could only be parried by Clayton into the path of Jasper Jones, who tapped home a third for Westbury.

Holland was denied by Hill yet again with just a few minutes of normal time left to play before the midfielder turned provider for his skipper in the 89th minute; playing the ball in behind the United defence for Langworthy, who had the legs to burst in the penalty area and delicately chip the ball over Hill and into the back of the net with aplomb – surely rescuing all three points for the visitors?!

But for the second league game in a row, the drama wasn’t over yet. Westbury earned themselves another set-piece in stoppage time which for the fourth time of the afternoon, the Mitres failed to deal with. Jones pounced, scoring his second and Westbury’s fourth of the day to conclude a thriller in Wiltshire.
