Five different goal scorers help Bishop’s Cleeve to victory over Paulton Rovers in an eight goal thriller at Kayte Lane!

Report by Paddy Gladman

The Mitres came out of the traps with bravery in the opening half an hour, desperate to right the wrongs of a miserable outing last weekend at local rivals Malvern.

However, in between themselves and an opener was Frankie Phillips, a young goalkeeper in fine form.

The visitors number one denied a number Cleeve chances, before making a spellbinding stop in the 31st minute to deny Toby Holland from scoring another one of his trademark free-kicks.

From the following corner, Will Turner eventually broke the deadlock for the Mitres. as the defender came up from the back to head home from Holland’s delicious delivery!

Soon came a second as Jay Malshanskyj terrorised the Paulton right flank, weaving in and out, before delivering an excellent cross that forced the unfortunate Neil Martin to turn into his own goal.

Five minutes before half-time, Cleeve struck their third! James Sunley initially had ‘de ja by’ after he was denied by Phillips for the second time, but thankfully Ethan Dunbar was alert as he pounced on the rebound and fired confidently into an empty net.

In the second half, Dunbar turned provider in the 70th minute when he wonderfully whipped the ball onto the head of the incoming captain fantastic Ross Langworthy, whose absence was more than notable last time out.

Manager, Paul Collicutt expressed at full-time how pleased he was with his skipper who “came in and made a big difference” to his side’s attack.

Unfortunately, for Cleeve’s captain though that bullet header was chalked off by the linesman’s controversial flag for offside, inspiring Rovers to fight back.

Player-manager, Kyle Tooze led by example as he pulled one back for Paulton just three minutes after that controversial call.

Thankfully for Cleeve, Langworthy eventually got his goal six minutes later…

Having initially been denied by the post admits a goalmouth scramble, and after a couple of brilliant blocks from the Paulton defence, Cleeve’s number 10 lashed beyond Phillips who was helpless; re-extending the hosts’ advantage to three!

A fifth came minutes later to ensure all three points would remain at Kayte Lane, when Malshanskyj set up Holland who ferociously fired past the depleted Phillips!

That goal was important as Rovers netted a consolation goal through Martin late on, who levelled up his tally for the afternoon having earlier scored at the wrong end.

However, the clinical Cleeve weren’t finished yet and in stoppage time, Malshanskyj cancelled out Martin’s effort when he burst into the penalty area before finishing with aplomb to wrap up a perfect afternoon for the Mitres who still have their heart’s set on achieving a play-off spot!

At full-time, the Cleeve boss said: “I feel a lot better than today, than I did at this time last week…’

‘We scored six but if the truth be known, it could have perhaps been two or three more - we created chance after chance!”

As for Paulton, their position remains perilous as their lurk just two points above the drop zone.
