Bishop's Cleeve moved to within a point of the title in their first match on the new 3G pitch at Kayte Lane

The Mitres went into this game knowing 4 points from the remaining 3 matches would be enough for the Hellenic League title, but also that avoiding defeat against Hereford Lads Club could be enough depending on Westbury United's result against Thornbury.

The first half was a frantic end to end affair and it didn't take long for the goals to start as in the seventh minute a quick chain of passing across the box saw Jack Watts slide in Joe Selman on the right who duly converted to send the bumper crowd wild.

However the lead was short lived when Hereford Lads Club's Henry Dyde, who was surely crossing from wide out on the left although only he will truly know, ended up lobbing Luke Merchant in the Cleeve goal to draw the visitors level.

Whilst it was an end to end first half, there were no more goals with Cleeve struggling to adapt their passing on the new pitch and Hereford Lads Club, whilst adapting well as used to their own 3G pitch, struggled to create much of a clear cut chance, although Kiea Cowley-Hair did test Merchant.

Cleeve's best chance in the half fell to Joe Selman when Linden Dovey's cross found him unmarked at the far post but Selman was unable to keep his header down before the visitors' Levi Ellis tested Merchant again just before half time. Whilst the score remain unchanged at 1-1 at half time the match did have the feel of one with more goals in, and so it proved!

A frantic opening 12 minutes to the second half saw Cleeve score 4 goals in 10 minutes to virtually seal the three points. First off, the Jack Watts and Jordan Annear combination clicked again with the latter doing brilliantly to win the header to knock down to Watts who's close range chipped finish was equally brilliant for his 32nd competitive goal of the season.

5 minutes later, a good piece of interplay on the left between Watts and Selman saw the former break along the byline and pull the ball back for Annear to tap into an empty net from a couple of yards out.

Cleeve's fourth came 3 minutes later when Dovey scored his first of the season, but what a goal it was and probably the goal of the season! From a Hereford Lads Club attack, Dovey won the ball on the edge of his own box and drove all the way to the other end of the pitch before unleashing a 25 yard curler to give the 'keeper no chance to score a goal that will live long in the memory of those that were there to witness it.

Just 2 minutes after it was that Annear to Watts combo again. Again a well won knock down and this time Watts received the ball, turned his man and lashed the ball into the far side of the goal, all in one movement, which in itself was a great goal but on this day struggled to even be best of the match such was the quality of the second half goals.

After that the goal mouth action became limited for a bit (how much do you want?!) but Cowley-Hair did again test Merchant who was up to the test.

Kieran Alder then added his hat into the ring for goal of the match as he received Watts' pass and placed a beautiful curling shot into the top corner.

The scoring finally stopped in the 88th minute when Annear was brought down in the box by Hereford Lads Club's 'keeper which prevented what would have been a certain goal. However, Watts stepped up to convert from the spot for his hattrick and complete a perfect homecoming for the Mitres.

With Westbury winning against Thornbury however it means the Mitres still need 1 more point from 2 matches to clinch the Hellenic League title, the first opportunity to do this is on Tuesday evening at home to Shrivenham.
