Bishop sutton manager Scott Armstrong has given his thoughts on the 2016/17 season.

Firstly I'd like to thank everyone involved with the club since my arrival in the summer. I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work and dedication to ensuring I've had a platform to work from this season.

This season for me was an unexpected one as I never had any formal plans to return to management or the game following a short break. However when the phone rang and the chairman asked if I would step in and help keep them in the Western League I couldn't resist. A few people thought I was mad taking on a massive task and a club who finished rock bottom of the western league in 2015/16 season. The club was also receiving some unwanted bad press and making national sport radio headlines following some criticism over bad form. As most people who know me know I will never shy away from a challenge and this was it at Sutton. Sutton again this season was tipped for a bottom two and favourites for relegation, something I never considered an option.

We had such a high turn around in players during pre season and first couple of months due to in my opinion lack of quality. Unfortunately due to this the squad suffered poor form at the start of the season. As results showed we wasn't a bad side and losing by the odd goal and mostly not getting results we deserved. I started to become sick of opposition managers say " you made us work for that! Or how are you near the bottom". Our form ahead of the Christmas period was very good and top of the table form which moved us away from the relegation battle although a tough festive period followed and three tough successive away trips on the bounce.

After the dip of form we managed to recover and put a couple of results together which secured our league status for another year. In my opinion we have under achieved with the ability we now have in the squad you only have to look at our return in points against sides in the top 10. We dropped silly points this season from good positions and dropped points against sides I expect to beat. What we also have to remember how far we have come from last season and during the season.

The players are now understanding my ways of working and what is expected of them. It's also pleasing to see that our current group of players have bonded together and not just a group of talented individuals. As everyone will know it's hard to keep all of my lads happy with such talent and offer them football all the time, but that's part of being a squad and a team player. One thing I want from my players moving forward is more discipline, consistency and availability in order to progress as a squad or individuals.

The highlight of this season for me has to be our FA Vase win away at this years First Division Champions Wellington. Although there has been several highlights I cannot name them all. The lows this season would be some of our performances and losing from winning positions but that's football.

There has been a lot of speculation with regards to my plans and future at the club. If I am open and honest about it I haven't thought about next season yet due to wanting to finish this season on a good note. I have spoken to the committee with regards to my requirements and they are currently working on these. I shall sit down with the club at some point over the next couple of weeks to continue our discussion. I as always like to switch off by the end of 2nd week in May due to having other commitments and family.

I'd like to thank and wish one of my assistants all the best for the future as Kenny Metcalf shall be stepping down from his role with the club. Kenny has been a great help and support for myself. Kenny won't be a stranger as he shall be about to watch the lads and Jack when he can.

Finally I hope my players enjoy the summer break and spending some much needed time with their families. They all know what Is required and my goals for next season so shall be looking after themselves during the break.

Cheers
Up the Sutton
Scott Armstrong
