It was with great shock and sadness that I learnt of the passing of Roger Morley, in the Royal Preston Hospital on the 26th October following a tragic accident at his home.
Roger first represented the Club in the juniors then, as a 16 year old, the U19 Colts. He was an integral part of the record breaking 1982-83 Colts XV, coached by his brother, Nick. Like so many of that cohort, Roger, a ferocious No.8, went on to represent the Club's senior teams with distinction. After his playing days were over, Roger used his skills as a qualified Electrician to assist the Club in any way he could. He will be remembered for his wonderfully acerbic sense of humour ..... I recall after a particularly disappointing defeat up at Workington in the early days of the Leagues, he surveyed a dejected changing room and pronounced, " The trouble with this team ... too many b****y suits! "
Educated at St. Wilfrids, he played Cricket for Cherry Tree in the Ribblesdale League, and was a member at Pleasington Golf Club. He also gave many years of service to the Scouting movement.
Whilst many of us have lost a good friend, our loss is as nought compared to that of Roger's wife Margaret, his children Richard and Jennifer and his extended family. I am sure all the players, members and supporters of Blackburn Rugby Club will join me in sending our thoughts, love and prayers to them at this most difficult of times.
