Fun Filled Final Fixture with Fylde
By Peter Newman
11s lose final game despite putting in a great effort.
On a fantastic, sunny Sunday morning, the 11s finished the season with a fixture against Fylde. The very kind Groundsman gave permission for the 11s to play on the 1st XV pitch which the boys enjoyed. Hopefully a few of them will be playing on it regularly in a few years time!!
Fylde brought a large squad and it was agreed to be play under 12 rules which included 5 in the scrum. It was a good job there was no pushing because Fylde would have suffered in a few scrums with the Blackburn powerhouse second rows, at one stage, consisting of Obi and Caleb!!!
The boys started well, putting in tackles, winning rucks and attacking the Fylde defence. Fylde's defence was excellent and it took a great effort from Alfie to open the scoring, driving through several Fylde defenders. Unfortunately, Fylde then started competing more at the rucks and started winning more ball which they used well and scored 4 unanswered tries. The lads put great effort in but need to box a little more cleverly. They did more running than they needed to, defending from side to side instead of coming up flat across the pitch, thus saving energy for putting in tackles.
The second 20 minutes was much the same as the 1st 20 with Fylde defending well, putting the Blackburn attack under pressure. The lads kept going but just couldn't break through and defended with great effort, only conceding 2 tries.
Having lost 2 players to injury early in the final 20, Fylde kindly lent the home team several very good players! Although, Fylde started well scoring 3 tries in succession, the game was very even. Blackburn fought back well, scoring 4 unanswered tries to sneak the the final 20, 4 to 3. 2 of the Fylde subs crossed after the Blackburn lads did all the hard work!!!! Rheon scored a well deserved try with some strong running. His effort and commitment throughout the whole game was second to none. Finally, after a frustrating game for Ben, he found some space and outpaced the Fylde defence to score in the corner from 30 metres out. Final score 5 - 9.
The lads performed well against a good Fylde squad. Several of their players attend Kirkham Grammar School where rugby is their main sport and it showed. So credit to our boys and a great finish to the season.
Hopefully, see you all at the Awards ceremony where i know Chris is working on his hour long speech!!!
