Burn beat Aldwinian’s 47-0 in their first competitive game of the season which saw them through to the next round of the Lancs Trophy.

With many new faces spread through the squad this match could have been a potential banana skin for Burn, however after a close first half they let rip in the second half and Aldwinian’s just couldn’t handle the pace and Burn cruised to a comfortable win.

Burn started with the wind behind them, however it was Aldwinian’s who started brighter, but Burn began to take control and by the 11th minute they had their first try. From a scrum on the Aldwinian’s 22 the ball was feed to the backs, Ben Rhodes-Powers crashed through the defensive line, he offloaded to the well supporting Ben Kelsall, he was stopped just short of the line, the ball was recycled and as Leon Fifield gathered it he had men outside, but he backed himself and cut inside and just had enough strength to get over the line. He then added the extra 2 points. Burn continued to remain on top and had it not be for a knock on just short of the line they would have scored on 24 minutes. However, they only had to wait another 5 minutes for their second try. Aldwinian’s tried to kick out of their 22, however it was well gathered by Harry Pilkington, he feed Marc Maher who made a break into the 22, he passed inside to Sam Parkinson who in turn found Sam Morgan and he ran on to score under the post’s. Fifield again kicked the conversion. There were no more scores in the first period leaving the half time score at 14-0.

After 9 minutes of the second half Aldwinian’s had a chance to narrow the points gap slightly, but a penalty kick from 40 metres came up short. A break out from their own 22 saw Burn make it to their opponents 22 and could have scored had it not been a deliberate knock on by an Aldwinian’s player that saw him sent to the sin bin. On 57 minutes Burn took a quick tap penalty from 5 metres out and Calum Kyle went low to score in the corner. Two minutes later Burn had their fourth try, Leon Fifield made a break from deep in his own half, he had Matt Hughes outside him, however Fifield kept going himself and drew in more defenders before passing back inside to Hughes who then had enough gas to go on and score. Fifield added the conversion. Almost as soon as Aldwinian’s were back up to 15 men they were back down to 14 as they had another man sent to the bin for taking Fifield out in the air. This made an already difficult task for Aldwinian’s even harder and they were punished further as Matt Hughes scored another try on 70 minutes, Aldwinian’s had been pressurising the Burn line, but had kicked away possession and this allowed Leon Fifield to break out of the 22, he then released Hughes who went around the last 2 defenders. Fifield again added the 2 extra points. Matt Hughes completed his hat-trick on 78 minutes, this time Lawson Whittaker broke into the Aldwinian’s half, he was brought down, the ball was recycled and Zac Child made some ground before passing to Matt Hughes who again had the pace to go round the remaining Aldwinian players. This time Sam Morgan kicked the conversion. Hughes wasn’t finished for the day as he scored a fourth try with the last play of the game. Again it was another break away try with Hughes going around the outside to run in and score. Sam Morgan added the 2 extra points to make the final score 47-0.

While there were plenty of promising signs in this game, tougher tests await as the league campaign starts next week with Kirby Lonsdale visiting Ramsgreave Drive.

Burn will travel to Warrington in the Quarter finals, the date is yet to be set.
