Both sides had chances to win this game and both probably think they should have done, however in the end a draw was a fair result.
Burn’s last 2 games had been cancelled while Warrington’s games were unaffected, so it would have been understandable that the visitors to Ramsgreave Drive started the sharper, but Burn will be disappointed how easily their opponents created overlaps which resulted in a try in the corner within 2 minutes of the kick off. After this early jolt Burn improved, Leon Fifield had a chance to get Burn’s first point’s from a penalty, but he pulled the kick just wide. After this Burn remained in the Warrington half and were having the better of the play, including dominating in the scrum. And this helped them score their first try of the day, as from a 5 metre scrum Jordan Pearson had a solid platform to pick and go, at first he was stopped short of the line, but he managed to twist and power over the line. Leon Fifield added the 2 extra points. Burn continued to remain on top, they were held up over the line on 23 minutes. Then from a scrum Burn got a decent shove on before Josh Reilly made a darting run from the back of the scrum, with a man outside him he had options, but a gap opened and he went through to score. Leon Fifield added the conversion. There were no more scores in the half, although Fifield did attempt a penalty kick from his own half, however it fell short, leaving the score at 14 – 5 at half time.
Warrington re-gathered and came out the stronger in the second half, however it was Burn who extended their lead with a well worked try finished off by Matt Hughes. Burn had taken play one way then the other before Sean Hall received the ball out wide, he made a darting run and made a half break to take him between two defenders, he managed to free his arms just enough to be able to offload an excellent pass, this released Matt Hughes who outpaced the remaining Warrington players to score. Leon Fifield was unable to convert, but Burn now led 19 – 5. This prompted a response from Warrington and they scored another try in the corner, however this time it was very well converted from the touch line. Warrington continued to have the better of the play, but Burn were able to hold them off and on 30 minutes Burn actually began to look the more threatening. However, it was Warrington who scored, it was a well taken try that started from a scrum on their own 22, the ball was spread wide and they managed to keep the ball alive and in hands, it is hard to tell you more as it was hard to see as the darkness was fast coming in, but the result was a try under the posts which made the conversion easy to tie the scores at 19 all and this is how the game finished.
While Burn had a chance of winning this game they should still be satisfied with a draw considering their game against Warrington at the start of the season, which saw Burn heavily beaten. Burn showed more grit this time round, after their early try Warrington may have thought they were in for an easy afternoon. Burn ensured they were not and they showed how they have improved since September. Burn will hope to continue their improvement in the new year with the next game now not until 9th January 2016!
