After a tight first half, a strong second half performance from Burn saw them pull away from their opponents and by the end they were pushing for a bonus point, however they were held up over the line with the last play of the game.
It was Eccles who started the game the better and they deserved to take a 3 nil lead from a penalty kick on 6 minutes. After this much of the play was in the middle of the park with neither team able to break the other down. Burn managed to pull level on 24 minutes as Leon Fifield slotted a penalty from close to 40 metres out. On 33 minutes Eccles came the closest so far to a try, but Burn held them up over the line. However from the next play the home side did score, from the 5 metre scrum it was passed wide and the winger scored in the corner. The conversion was well kicked from the touch line to give Eccles a 10-3 lead. With the last play of the half Burn managed to hit back, from a line out they caught and drove, Ed Sinclair kept control of the ball at the back and as his team mates reached the try line he was able crash down to score. An excellent kick from the touch line from Leon Fifield added the 2 extra points to leave the score 10 all at half time.
Burn stepped up the intensity at the start of the second and were rewarded with a try after 2 minutes. The ball had been passed right along the backs, when they were stopped the ball was passed back to the left, Liam Canning received it and a nice arched run took him round the remaining defender to score. Leon Fifield kicked the conversion. On 49 minutes Fifield added another penalty kick from around 35 metres out to take the score to 20 – 10. Ill discipline then crept into Burn’s game, first this presented an easy penalty to Eccles and then Jake Maher was shown a yellow card. With the number supremacy Eccles looked more threatening, but Burn managed to defend well and held off the home sides advances. Then on 73 minutes Burn stretched their lead with another try from Liam Canning as he benefited from an excellent off load from Tony Thomo. Leon Fifield added the 2 extra points and now Burn had a 14 point cushion. Eccles were not finished and on 37 minutes they kicked to the corner, from the resulting line out they passed along the backs to score in the corner, the conversion was missed. Burn pushed hard for their fourth try in the dying minutes, they had a chance from a 5 metre scrum, but they were unable to ground the ball and the game finished 27- 18 to Burn.
This was an important win for Burn, if Burn hope to finish in a more secure position this year these are the teams that they need to beat and this was a good start. Another such game comes next week as Burn welcome Altrincham to Ramsgreave Drive.
