After Burn’s last two home games, it was important for Burn to get back to winning ways at Ramsgreave Drive and 3 tries along with a strong defensive performance ensured they did this.
Burn got off with a great start with a try after 5 minutes, they had kicked to the corner, from the line out they caught and drove, they were stopped just short of the line before Tom Lavelle picked the ball and borrowed down to score. Leon Fifield missed the conversion. Burn continued to have the better of the play and on 16 minutes Leon Fifield had a penalty chance, but was unable to kick the goal. Warrington were not offering too much to worry Burn and on 30 minutes Burn extended their lead with another catch and drive, this time Joe Shorrock was in control of the ball as Burn crashed over. Leon Fifield added the extra 2 points to take the score to 12 nil. After this Warrington managed to retain some possession and had their best period of the game so far. They made it in to Burn’s 22, but last ditch tackles kept them out and the half ended with Burn 12 points up.
Burn had a great opportunity to push on early in the second half when a Warrington player was sin binned, from the resulting penalty Burn elected to take a 5 metre scrum, they got a good drive on and drove Warrington back over the line, however as Luke Cunningham attempted to take control of the ball and touchdown the ball was lost forward. However, Burn didn’t need to wait long for their third try of the game, Warrington had kicked clear from their 22, Harry Pilkington caught and broke back into the 22 before being stopped, the ball was recycled, they drove the ball on through the forwards before spreading the play wide where it reached Jake Maher, he bounced his opponent out of the way before twisting to score in the corner. Fifield was unable to kick the conversion. After this much of the play was in the Burn half, but Burn defended well with Warrington unable to break through and on 63 minutes Burn nearly punished them further after Leon Fifield broke from his own half, he chipped over the Warrington defence and managed to re-gather the ball, he decided to back himself and cut back inside, but he was stopped, he did manage to offload, Liam Canning gathered before passing to Harry Pilkington, he managed to beat a man but was then bundled into touch 5 metres from the try line. Not long after Burn had another chance, again Fifield was involved, he made a good break and was stopped just short of the line, but the supporting Burn player just knocked on as he attempted to pick up the ball. In the closing 15 minutes Burn seemed to ease off and started to give more penalties away and made more mistakes, this gave Warrington more of the ball in the Burn half. Despite the greater possession Warrington were unable to capitalise on this as they also made mistakes, but also Burn’s defence kept knocking them down and this left the final score as 17 nil to Burn.
Burn were on top for much of the game, but Warrington never gave up and kept trying to come back at Burn, however they had no success as Burn blunted any attacks with a well organised and strong defensive display, this game was the first time Warrington fail to get any points on the board this season. Burn’s defence will need to be at its best in the coming weeks as they have a tough run of games and this starts next week away at Burnage.
