While Burn were never really at their best in this game they had more than enough to beat a struggling Eccles side as they scored 5 tries to pick up the maximum 5 points.
Burn were on top from the start of the game, but handling errors caused attacks to breakdown. Burn put earlier mistakes aside as they scored their first try on 10 minutes, Danny Maher had made a powerful break to help take play towards Eccles’ 22, the ball was released to the backs, Marc Maher put in a cross field kick, Leon Fifield chased the kick and hacked on, Burn then had a bit of luck as the ball hit the corner flag and bounced into the try zone enabling Fifield to fall on the ball to score, he then added the conversion from the touchline. From the kick off Burn were penalised, Eccles kicked for goal, the ball hit the post and from the rebound the visitors re-gathered possession and Burn were again penalised, this time Eccles successfully kicked the penalty. This was really as good as it got for Eccles as Burn made it try number 2 on 24 minutes, Josh Reilly took a quick tap penalty from 5 metres from the Eccles try line, he then passed to Tom Lavelle, he then offloaded out the back of his hand to Danny Maher, he fended off the defenders before going low to score. Leon Fifield added the 2 extra points. Burn remained on top, but they were making too many mistakes to trouble the try line again in the half and had to settle with a penalty by Fifield with the last play of the half, this made the score at the break 17-3 to Burn.
Burn pressed hard at the start of the second half for a try, first Danny Maher was held up over the line, then Liam Canning was too, but eventually a try came as the referee awarded a penalty try after Burns pack were pushing their opponents back in a 5 metre scrum, Eccles committed an offence with the referee adjudging it denied Burn a certain try. The conversion was easy for Leon Fifield. Burn secured a bonus point on 61 minutes after a bulldozing run from 10 metres out by Lawson Whitaker. Fifield was unable to kick the conversion. Burn’s fifth and final try came on 70 minutes, from a 5 metre scrum the ball was released to the backs, a long pass from Sean Hall reached Leon Fifield on the wing, he had one man to beat and he did this with ease to enable him to score his second try. Again Fifield was unable to add the 2 extra points, but Burn now led 34-3. There were no more points in the remainder of the game, but on a sour note a scuffle resulted in Liam Canning receiving a yellow card and an Eccles player receiving a red.
Burn dominated this game with Eccles offering little, in the second period it is hard to think of any time they spent in the Burn half. This win sees Burn remain fifth in the league table, they now have 40 points, this is just 1 point less than their entire total from last season. They have 1 game before Christmas and it would be nice to pass last year’s points tally before the turn of the year, it would be a good marker to show how far the team have come since last season, however it won’t be easy as Burn need to travel away to Altrincham Kersal.
