Burn kept up their good run as they beat Altrincham Kersal 8-34.

Burn failed to spark in the first half, however as the second half progressed they looked more threatening and started to pull away from Kersal, although they had to wait until the last play of the game to secure a bonus point.

The opening stages of the game was littered with mistakes from both sides. Kersal were the first to have a chance at points, but a penalty kick on 16 minutes was missed. Leon Fifield soon after made no mistake as he slotted a penalty from the half way line. Burn continued to struggle to keep hold of the ball and on 22 minutes Kersal hit back with a penalty of their own. Fifield was at it again just before the half hour mark as he kicked another 3 points from the half way line. Not long after he had a third attempt from the half way line, but this time just pulled the ball to the right. However, Fifield didn’t need to wait long for another opportunity, this time it was a little shorty as the attempt was from a mere 40 metres out, he didn’t disappoint as the ball sailed through the posts to give Burn a 3-9 lead. Although before the break Kersal hit back, they had made their way into the Burn 22, options were limited and they put in a grubber kick aiming for touch, it did make touch, but after a deflection off a Burn player. This gave the home side the throw in, they caught and drove, at first Burn held them out, but then a Kersal forward peeled off to go low and score. The conversion was missed, but the half time score couldn’t be much closer as Burn just led by a single point.

The second half started in the same vein as the first, scrappy. Kersal should have taken the lead on 47 minutes, but missed a very kickable penalty. Finally Burn began to flow a little more and managed to score the first of their 4 tries. They had made their way into their opponents 22, from a quick tap penalty they drove for the line before spreading it wide, as the ball reached Sean Hall there was still plenty to do, he had a man outside him, but the defence was drifting so he decided to cut inside beating a defender before holding of 2 others to stretch and score. Leon Fifield was unable to add the extra points. However on 60 minutes he did kick another penalty to make the score 8-17. On 65 minutes Burn scored their second try, from a scrum within the Kersal half the ball was spread wide, it reached Sean Hall again, he stepped round his opposite man, before drawing another and passed to Harry Pilkington, he still had work to do, he at first looked to go on the outside, but then jinked inside past the defenders to score. The conversion attempt failed as it hit the post. Kersal came back at Burn and pressurised the Burn line, however time after time Burns defence held strong and kept their opponents out. As the game entered the closing stages Burn punished Kersal for their inability to breach the Burn defence. On 75 minutes Sean Hall kicked through and Harry Pilkington won the foot race to touch down to score. The conversion was missed, however Burn were not finished and they saved the best for last as they scored with the final play of the game to secure a bonus point. Kersal had the throw in to a line out on their own 22, Burn disrupted it, they then drove on before the ball was released to the backs, Marc Maher made a half break, his one handed off load found Josh Reilly, he matched Maher as he offloaded one handed to Danny Booth, he then drew a man and passed to Matthew Wilkinson and he had enough strength to hold off the covering defenders to score under the posts. The conversion was easy for Leon Fifield and Burn had a 8-34 victory.

This win helps Burn remain mid-table. While they were not at their best, they ran out comfortable winners. Yet again they defended well, they managed to soak up Kersal’s pressure and when they finally managed to retain ball they were able to finish off their chances and made Kersal pay. Next week welcome Waterloo to Ramsgreave Drive.
