Burn were back at Ramsgreave Drive and back to winning ways, with a comfortable 50-7 win over Upper Eden.

Upper Eden had started the day above Burn in the table, however the home side dominated their opponents for large parts of the game and a score tally of 8 tries to 1, secured a bonus point win enabling Burn to leapfrog Upper Eden in the league standings.

Burn played into a strong breeze in the first half, they started quickly, but Jamie Mayall was unable to convert an early penalty chance. Then on 10 minutes Burn had their first try, from a scrum close to half way Burn went blind, the ball was fed to Danny Holland, he squeezed through a gap before drawing the last defender and passing to give Jamie Mayall a run round under the posts. Mayall converted to make the score 7 nil to Burn. Burn came close to scoring again on 17 minutes, but Josh Thundercliffe was held up over the line. However, from the resulting 5 metre scrum Burn did score, the ball had come loose at the back of the scrum, but Danny Holland managed to scamper back gather the ball and keep low to sneak over the try line. This time Mayall was unable to convert. Burn’s third try came on 22 minutes and Upper Eden would have been disappointed with their defence, the ball had been turned over on the 10 metre line and Marc Maher easily found a way through the defensive line and easily streaked off to score under the posts. Jamie Mayall successfully slotted the 2 extra points taking the score to 19 nil. After this Upper Eden had more of the game aided with Burn being regularly penalised, but Burn defended well. The closest the away side came to scoring in the half was on 36 minutes, after a quick tap penalty caught Burn cold and the Upper Eden right winger broke free and looked like he could score before Sean Hall put in an excellent covering tackle. This stirred Burn and they found themselves pressuring their opponent’s line, from several 5 metre scrums they had Upper Eden’s scrum going backwards, further pressure was put on the away side as they had a man sent to the sin bin for too many team fouls. From another 5 metre scrum Burn again got a push on, it was picked up at the back of the scrum, a couple of phases followed before Nick King drove low to stretched and score his first try for Burn. The conversion was missed, but Burn lead 24-0 at half time.

Burn started the second half as they had finished the first with a try after only 3 minutes, the ball went left and then came backright through the backs, Sam Morgan was stopped just short of the try line, put Nick King gathered the ball and crashed over for his second try. The conversion was successfully kicked by Jamie Mayall making the score 31 nil. Burn had a further try on 50 minutes, from the 10 metre line Danny Holland found a way through the defence again, he made it to the 22, however was tracked down by the retreating defenders, but his one handed lobbed pass inside found the supporting Adam Todd who had a free run to score under the posts. Again Mayall kicked the extra 2 points. From the kick off the ball did not go 10, Upper Eden went to sleep as Josh Thundercliffe gathered the ball and had a run down the wing, he fed the ball inside to Nick King who charged on, the ball was recycled and went to the backs, Cameron Boulter passed to Anton Garcia before looping round and receiving the ball back from Garcia, which created the space for Boulter to cruise to score on his home debut. Mayall kicked the conversion taking the score to 45-0. Cameron Boulter had a hand in Burns final try of the match, first he fed Joe Shorrock who had a strong run up to the 22, when the ball was recycled Boulter got the backs moving which created an overlap for Jamie Mayall to sprint down the line and score in the corner. He was not able to kick the conversion, but Burn had reached the 50 point mark. However, this was as good as it got for Burn and on 67 minutes Upper Eden managed to get on the score sheet with a try and conversion, they had been aided by the fact that due to injury the scrums had become uncontested, which enabled them to attack from the back of scrums, an area where they had struggled all day due to Burns superiority in the scrum. This had helped Upper Eden to force their way up to the home sides 22 and then it was Burn’s inability to deal with a chip through which enabled Upper Eden to fall on the ball over the Burn try line to score. The rest of the game really petered out leaving the final score at 50-7 to Burn.

After the disappointment of last week this was a welcome return to form for Burn, they looked a different team from the side who slipped to defeat up at Whitehaven, this was even more impressive as they were without potentially 5 players who could have challenged for a spot in the team had they been available. This is great for competition for places and the players will need to train hard ahead of a really tough game next week as they travel to an in form St. Benedict’s.

Head coach, Dino Radice, was pleased with his side “The lads who came in did well, discipline was better on the whole. I’m looking forward to next week as we face tough St. Benedict’s side.”
