Burn secured a bonus point win as they beat Tarleton 36-6 at Ramsgreave Drive.

However the visitors made it hard for Burn, especially in the first half, with Burn just leading 8-6 at the break and Tarleton had the chance to take the lead, yet 2 missed penalty chances let Burn off and as the second half progressed they took more control and took the game away from Tarleton.

Tarleton started much better than the home side and were rewarded with 3 points after a penalty kick in front of the posts. Burn responded quickly and equalled the score as Sam Morgan slotted 3 penalty points on 9 minutes, however on 14 minutes the away side were back in front with another penalty kick. After this Burn came close to scoring a try, from a scrum in the middle of the pitch the ball was fed out to Sean Hall, he found Adam Stubbs who had a strong run up the line, he passed back inside to Tom Marland in turn he offloaded onto Sam Parkinson, he was stopped short, Burn’s forwards picked and went for the line but were held up over the line. Burn were thwarted at this point, however from the resulting scrum the ball reached Sam Morgan he made a few yards, Jordan Pearson then took the ball on, the ball was recycled and Liam Oldham was stopped short, this time Burn could not be stopped as Nick King went low from a metre out to score. The conversion was missed, but Burn led for the first time 8-6. Just after this Tarleton did have a kickable penalty, but it was missed, Burn also missed a kick 10 minutes later. After this much was in the middle of the pitch with Burn making regular mistakes resulting in them being unable to put any sustained pressure in Tarleton’s 22, this left the score 8-6 at half time.

Burn started the second half much brighter and did manage to pressure the Tarleton 22, however penalties allowed the away side to clear the danger and also gave them a kick at goal, again they failed to take the opportunity to regain the lead, but Burn did lose Sean Hall to the sin bin. Despite the number supremacy, Tarleton would live to regret the penalty misses as Burn wrestled control of the game and turned the screw on a battling Tarleton. This started a flow of tries, the first of which was after 49 minutes, from the 10 metre line Cameron Boulter tied in a couple of men before trying a speculative one handed pass, it went to ground, but the bounce was favourable to Burn which helped release Rick Maudsley and his arcing run took him around the defence and he just managed to squeeze in the corner. Sam Morgan excellently kicked the conversion and Burn had a 15-6 lead. On 57 minutes Rick Maudsley had his second try, Tarleton had a scrum within their own 22, the ball popped out and Sean Hall pounced on it, Burn then went through a couple of phases before spreading the ball along the backs reaching Maudsley on the wing, again his arcing run took him into the corner. This time Jamie Mayall successful kicked the conversion from the corner. On 70 minutes Burn stretched their lead, this was after they scored from a push over scrum from 5 metres out, with Tom Marland the man to fall on the ball as they drove their opponents back over their try line. The conversion was again kicked by Jamie Mayall and Burn lead 29-6. With the final play of the game Burn scored a try and conversion, again this was from a push over try, this time Jordan Pearson was the man to touch down, Jamie Mayall was the one who kicked the extra 2 points, this took the final score to 36-6.

At half time Burn were far from comfortable, Tarleton were proving stiff opposition, they were defending well and preventing Burn building any pressure, although this was also a result of mistakes by Burn. Once Burn had scored their second try this seemed to give them confidence and as time went on the victory looked more assured.

This was another home win for Burn, they now face two tough away games in a row, the first of these is next week against Aldwinians.
