UE were the latest side to come to Ramsgreave Drive, but they were unable to prevent Burn securing another bonus point win, although the home side did not have it all their own way as the visitors managed to score 3 tries.
It was UE who scored first on 8 minutes as they managed to catch and drive on before the ball was passed out to a forward who powered over from 5 metres out, the conversion was successful and o the score was 7-0. Burn hit back with a try and conversion of their own on 12 minutes, they had won a line out 5 metres out, they drove on and then the ball was released to the backs, Anton Garcia took the ball flat and went straight through the defence to score under the posts, Sam Morgan then added the 2 extra points. Burn’s second try came on 24 minutes, from a scrum on their opponents 22 Josh Reilly received the ball he showed and went straight through a gap, Sam Morgan again added the conversion. Just 2 minutes later Burn scored again, this time Jake Maher joined the line he showed a dummy which created space for him to cruise through to score. Sam Morgan slotted the kick, this made the score 21-7. This is how the score remained at half time, although Burn were put under severe pressure by UE before the break and they suffered a blow as Alex Evans was shown a yellow card on 38 minutes, but the defence held strong and prevented their opponents from scoring.
Despite being a man down Burn started the second half with a try, a few phases had taken play into the UE 22, the ball was released into the backs Sam Morgan cut back inside before flipping the ball out of the back of his hand to Ben Renton who took the ball and his arcing run saw him go through a defensive hole to score. Morgan followed this up with another conversion. On 46 minutes Burn added another try and it was an excellent try, UE had tried to run the ball out of their own 22, Luke Cunningham excellently stole the ball at the break down, the ball was then released to the backs, Sam Morgan crashed on, the ball was recycled before a long pass reached Jake Maher on the wing and he then outpaced the defence to score his second try of the game. Sam Morgan kept up his 100% success with another conversion. This made the score 35-7 and Burn looked like they were cruising. However after this the wheels began to come off a little, no sooner were Burn back up to 15 men they were back down to 14 as on 49 minutes Sam Morgan was binned for a tip tackle. It got worse 5 minutes later as Sean Hall was also shown a yellow card leaving Burn with 13 men on the pitch. UE took advantage of this and soon scored in the corner and they continued to keep up the pressure on Burn, but the home side managed to resist their opponents. Then against the run of play Burn began to spark again, a good break by Sean Hall took play into UE’s half, he found Ben Renton, he then passed to Craig Aikman, however his pass back inside was adjudged forward by the referee. In the closing minutes Ben Renton scored his second and Burn’s sixth try, Rob Melling had started the move in his own half with a long pass, this released the backs, with the ball reaching Craig Aikman on the wing, this time his pass back inside was fine and found Ben Renton who ran on to score. Sam Morgan was unable to make it 6 out of 6. For Burn it was a disappointing end as they allowed UE to score with the last play of the game, it was a good skipping run from the UE back as he beat 3 defenders to score under the posts, but Burn would have hoped to have stopped him. The conversion was successful which left the final score 40-19.
Burn will be pleased that they scored another bonus point victory which keeps them within touching distance of league leaders Leigh, however they lost momentum in the second half due to some ill discipline and were lucky they had a good gap between them and their opponents. Burn will need to be at their best next week as they face a very tough trip to St. Benedict’s.
