Sunday 2 October. Senior Colts. Widnes 17- 14 Blackburn.

Sadly, today’s scheduled league game away at Bowden was cancelled. Our opposition have unfortunately struggled to field a full team this season and hence had to concede the tie. This is happening across all the leagues at the moment, so the importance of building and retaining a squad of players is imperative. We wish Bowden all the very best for the rest of the season.

Luckily our friends at Widnes had their home fixture cancelled and with a ref pre-booked invited us over to play.

Burn travelled with only 15. A mixture of players carrying various injury niggles, which we didn’t want to risk for a friendly, and some unavailable put real pressure on the lads, a number of which played out of position.

The match transpired to be a classic game of two halves.

Burn led early on after a strong period of possession took them downfield and Lewis Delamere ran a great line to power over under the posts. Captain Tom Foster converted.

Widnes battled hard and the remainder of the half was a tight affair until Burn had the put in at the scrum just into the Widnes half, which led to quick ball to fly half Foster. This allowed him to break the game line and run an excellent straight line before off loading perfectly to Calum Redhead, who supported him really well from fullback and finished off well under the posts. Again, Foster easily converted.

Half time arrived with Burn 14-0 up.

The second half was a different affair. Due to injury Widnes had to make a few replacements without front row experience and the scrums, which Burn had been getting the better of, went uncontested - which didn’t go in our favour.

Widnes had numbers in depth and manged their team well against a tiring Burn who had worked very hard throughout.

This led to Widnes scoring two unconverted tries in quick concession, setting up a big finish. Sadly, for Burn we couldn’t contain their pressure and Widnes scored in the opposite corner in the dying minutes - which was converted with a brilliant kick from the touch line.

Burn had their chances in the second half but were held up over the line twice by Widnes. Scoring one of these would have secured the win, but it wasn’t meant to be.

A highly competitive game and a big effort from our 15.

Last week our RFU National Cup game at Lymm away was cancelled by the home team, hence we proceed to the next round and have drawn Caldy away on Sunday 9 October.

Hopefully we have a few of our players returning from injury for this which should be another strong test for the lads.
