The sixes enjoyed a tussle with local rivals Bexley CC in the Park. Spectators were not short-changed by a match that ebbed and flowed and finally game down to the last ball where Bexley could not claim the 2 runs required for a win.
The sixes elected to bat and Jeremy Nelson (19) and Krishna Kumar (35) made a strong start to the innings. The loss of two quick wicket brought captain Richard Ward to the crease. He held firm as wickets fell around him and Blackheath edged towards a competitive score. Ward made his first fifty (60) since 2014 as he and Sam Tobin put on a quick fire 29 for the 9th wicket before Ward was trapped LBW with the score on 156. No further runs were added and the home team handed Bexley an extra over.
Runs came quickly in response with a quick outfield helping the batsmen. Andrew Anderson and Kiran Pinto both claimed three wickets but as the game ebbed towards Bexley, a strong effort in the field and regular bowling changes held Bexley in check. The final over arrived with Bexley requiring 7. Throughout the chase, Bexley had been anchored by the #5 batsman who at 13 stood out as a player of the future. Bexley could not manage the two required from the final ball as Blackheath and Sam Tobin bowling, held their nerve.
This was an excellent match and a great advert for lower league cricket.
